"DEFENDER"
CPU
* SCHEMATIC * ERRORS
VENDING
BY HOWARD M. SMITH, ARLINGTON, TX
There are several errors in the Williams "Defender" CPU Nideo
Board Logic Diagram, R8570, Sheet 1 of 2. This is the CPU
schematic found in the "Defender" book with the light green
cover.
1 . In the center of the page, just under the CMOS RAM, two
7411 AND gates at 60 are incorrectly drawn as NAND gates.
Also, the gate with pin 6 for an output should have its inputs
numbered 3, 4, and 5 from top to bottom. 2. Pin 18 of the CMOS
RAM at 1 E is shown to be connected to pin 4 of the 7 43 2 at 4R. It
should be redrawn to connect to pin 5 of the same 7432. 3. Just
above the batteries, an inverter at 5B is incorrectly labeled
"7474". It should be changed to read "7404". 4. On the right
side of the page, a 7411 AND gate at 3B has its inputs numbered
1, 13, and 3. Pin 3 should be changed to read pin 2. 5. The crystal
CRl is labeled 120 Mhz. This should be changed to 12.0 Mhz.

COIL
CHANGE
Change the Firepit Coil from an A-4893 to an A-19300. This
will eliminate the 2N5875 and coil from burning out. See

MODIFICATIONS
A. Transistor Change
B. Resistor Additions to the 2N5875 driver transistors.
A. Transistor Change
1. The 2N5875 transistor (Q5), (located on the lower playfield
underside), that drives the ball up-kicker coil (kicks the ball from the
lower playfield to the upper playfield) must be changed to a
2N5879.
2.
A 4. 7K ohm,.¼ watt resistor must be connected to the base of the
2N5879 with the other end of the resistor connected to +24vdc.
Wire colors coded red-red-red (222) are +24vdc.
B. Resistor Additions
I.
2.
A 4. 7K ohm ¼ watt resistor must be connected to the bases of the
remaining four 2N 5 8 7 5 transistors with the other end of the resistor
connected to +24 vdc. Wires color coded red-red-red (222) are
+24vdc.
Upper Playfield 2N5875 Transistor Assignments
QI Hole Kicker (Captive Hole)
Q2 Ball Release Gate
Lower Playfield 2N5875 Transistor Assignments
Q3 Ball Release Gate
Q4 Hole Kicker (Captive Hole)
(The upper left corner of the playboard facing the playboard
which is in the position shown in the following figure.) See
page 44 of the Black Hole instruction manual.
Games with serial numbers less than #8926 require the transistor
change (2N5875 to 2N5879).
Games with serial numbers less than #9160 require the resistor
additions. Games shipped from the factory with serial numbers
higher than #9160 will include both A and B modifications.
Games with serial numbers between #6271 and #9160have a !OK
resistor connected to the base of Q5 . When changing Q5 to a
2N5879, remove the lOK and change to a 4.7K ohm resistor as
mentioned in step A-2.
A 2N5879 can be substituted by a 2N5883, if 2N5879s are not
readily available.
NOTE: Serial numbers are stamped in the cabinet on the right
inside wall just above the ball runway.
