NEW SYSTEM 80A
Commencing with "Devil's Dare"
pinball and " Caveman" pin-video,
Gottlieb has introduced System 80A.
Permanently replacing System 80 in
all future games, System 80A has
improved bookkeeping and self-test
capabilities, permits the use of seven-
digit displays, and allows for greater
coin/credit combination flexibility.
The control board's ROM memory
chips, U2 and U3, have been repro-
grammed for System 80A. For ease
of troubleshooting and fast inter-
changeability, U2 and U3 have been
socketed. In doing so, there is no need
to keep on hand dedicated control
boards for two systems. By using the
appropriate sets ofROMs, the D107
control board can be used in either
system. The RO Ms have been marked
for easy identification.

NINTENDO
"DONKEY KONG" PIX FLIP MOD
Symptom: Game freezes; picture flips
upside down.
Solution: 4 Board Set:
Attach a 0.1 MFD ceramic capacitor
to IC 3M(CPUboard)pin 15 topin8
resistance between the coin door lock
and the chassis ground around the
power supply. If the resistance is
greater than one ohm, add a wire from
the green ground wire inside the game
to a stud on the coin door itself. Use
tie wraps to secure the high voltage
cable away from the components on
the board and away from the chassis
ground. It is all right if the cable is on
the tube itself.

Subject: Mini " Pac-Man" Static
Problem
Symptom: Game resetting, scrambled
video graphics, credit accumulation
and assorted strange happenings
Solution: After trying everything, I
found that by keeping the high voltage
anode wire away from all game wiring
and harnesses, the static problem and
associated symptoms disappeared!

MIDWAY "MS. PAC-MAN" NOTES

SUMMIT AMUSEMENT

Nintendo "Donkey Kong"
This top earning game has a few parts
that give trouble. The joystick is a
case in point. As I stated previously,
the costly Nintendo parts were out of
stock, so a Wico joystick was substi-
tuted. Wico now offers a kit to install
their joystick in "Donkey Kong".
This kit features the latest improve-
ments. The most significant is the
larger diameter joystick. Also, included
is a larger diaphragm. A metal washer
is under the diaphragm. This prevents
STAR*TECH Journal APRIL 1982
the joystick from being driven down if
hit by a hard object.
Rowe Bill Changers
The test button inside the changer has
a cover that must be closed when not
in use. If it isn't, a person with a stiff
wire may go in through the coin dish
and "jackpot" the changer. It would
be helpful if the lid was weighted and
hinged from the back so it would close
by itself.
Tommy Lift Gates
Some time ago, I installed a Tommy
Lift on my Ford Truck. Just recently,
one of my tail lamps burned out. I
found out the hard way that I had to
remove the gate to get at the screws in
the tail lamp. When installing a power
gate, it would be advisable to remove
any screws that couldn't be reached
easily at a later date.
Stern Pop Bumpers
The late model Stem Pop Bumpers
have had little or no service. There
has been one minor problem with
them concerning lack of enough power
transmitted to the ball. The part that
makes them feel a bit sluggish is the
plastic ring. Wico now manufactures
a heavy metal pop bumper ring for
this unit. The late Stem pinballs that
are good earners should be converted
while the game is being shopped. The
price should be under $2.00.
Midway "Ms. Pac-Man" Notes
So far, it appears Midway's "Ms.
Pac-Man" is going to be one of the
strongest re-dos of all time. Using
"Ms." in place of"Deluxe" or some
other name was brilliant strategy on
Midway's part. The game will increase
the player base.
The mini "Ms. Pac-Man" has a
small defect that could cause the
game to be out of order. There is a 40-
pin ribbon connector between the
main board and the auxiliary board.
This connector can be hooked while
removing the coin box. The pins are
very brittle and can then break. Also,
if the cash box is removed for collec-
tion and the game is left on, the coins
will fall to the bottom of the cabinet.
The fuse block is located on the
bottom of the game and the coins may
short out the game. It would be wise to
cover the fuses .
A few of the games have had the
nuts that mount the joystick come
loose. Make sure they are all tight
before you place the game on location.
