When checking this circuit the technician would then connect the
data probe from the logic tracer to the indicated test points in
Figure 17. If the circuit were functioning properly, the cunent
indicated displays would be observed. If the displays shown are
other than those that are indicated in the figure, the technician
could assume that a fault exists in the circuit, and he would work
back through the circuit until proper displays are obtained. Then,
just as when using an oscilloscope to examine waveforms in analog
circuits, the technician would use the logic tracer to eventually
localize the trouble to a gate where the correct displays exist at the
input, but an incorrect display exists at the output. In this way, a
gate that is defective undor dynamic conditions can be readily
identified.
As digital systems become more and more complex, considerable
thought must be given during the original circuit design to provide
test points and reference signals for repair and maintenance. A
device such as a logic tracer can be extremely useful for
troubleshooting digital systems as long as the circuit designer has
taken the necessary steps to properly design serviceability into the
circuits.

A logic tracer may also be used to compare circuit conditions in a
system known to be functioning properly with those of an identical
system that is malfunctioning. In cases where the manufacturer
does not provide sufficient troubleshooting information, comparison
testing is a fast and practical method of locating faults.
