Operators!
Mechanics!
Are you searching for a
painless way to upgrade
your ability to repair the
Electronic games you
operate ... the games you
depend on for your
livelihood?
Randy Fromm's Arcade
Schools offers 46 hours
of comprehensive, practi-
cal training in electronic
amusement repair for
mechanics and operators.
You don't need an
oscilloscope ... to be
successful at repairing
Solid-State games. The
course stresses the
efficient use of test
equipment like the Logic
Probe
and
Digital
Multimeter; relatively in-
expensive equipment that
operators and mechanics
can easily afford .
Is the course expensive?
Not really. The tuition fee
of $400.00 includes over
$7 5.00 worth of textbooks,
databooks, and other
materials.
Randy Fromm's Arcade
School will not teach you
how to repair a jukebox,
electromechanical pinball
or vending machine. You
will learn about diodes,
transistors, power supplies,
electronic pinball, video
games (including a special
session on video games
that use the X-Y monitor
system), cross referencing
semiconductor replace-
ment parts, using a logic
probe, and more.

ROCK-OLA
INTERMITTANT * PROBLEMS* AND* SOLUTIONS
PROBLEM:
A few operators have reported occassional intermittant problems with
Rock-Ola Microcomputer Controlled Phonographs . These problems may
include one or more of the following :
a) Magazine keeps on scanning and never stops.
b) Gripper arm tries to pick up a record in the home position.
c) Mechanism keeps on playing the same record over and over.
d) Proper amount of credits are shown on the credit display window but
selection keyboard is inoperative.
CAUSE:
These problems are brought on by strong static discharges causing:
1) Latch up of I.C. 405 (CMOS Hex Buffer CD4050) on Newer Type Logic
Board (R.M.C. Part No. 53560-A).
2) Latch up of LC. 401A (CMOS Hex Inverter CD4069) on Logic Filter
Board No. 2 (R.M.C. Part No. 53555-A).
When either LC. malfunctions, the oscillator waveform will be improper and
the microprocessor will not operate correctly.
SOLUTION:
This problem can be corrected by disconnecting the tan wire from pin 10 of
Socket S401 at the Mechanism Logic Connector or at the Logic Filter Board
as the case may be. This lead acts as a pick-up antenna for the static inter-
ference and the troubles do not occur when it is disconnected.
NOTE:
This change should be incorporated only on those machines where newer types
of Credit and Pop Meter boards OR Credit and Pop Meter filter boards are
being used. These boards have new self-contained oscillator circuits and do not
require the oscillator signal from the Mechanism Logic Boards.

Shorting the coin entry lamp socket
to the front door with power on can
cause a constant Ram Test pattern or
Ram Failure message on Williams
"Defender". The symptoms can be
traced to a loss of-5V due to fuse F4
being blown. If the machine is left on
without the -5V, the 4116 rams may
be degraded to the point of failure.
Replacing the fuse right away will
normally get the machine up and
running. Turning the machine off
before changing these bulbs will avoid
this problem altogether.

QUESTIONS FOR

NEW TECHNICIANS
BY EDWARD J. SCHMIDT
16. Set function switch: D.C.; range
switch to next highest scale,
example: 500 V; black lead:
common on meter to circuit
ground; red lead: + on meter to
circuit potential. Read voltage on
D.C. 0-50 range.
17. An electronic circuit containing
transistors and perhaps diodes,
resistors and capacitors, along
with interconnecting electrical
conductors-processed and
contained entirely within a single
chip of silicon.
18. A. CE
19. Decoder output active low will
turn Q 1 off causing the + 5 at
R2 120Jt resistor to turn on the
base of Q 2. Q2 turns on.
20. C. High and low logic levels.
THIS CONCLUDES BALLY"S 20 QUESTION TECH QUIZ.
Fuse F4 is a IA slow-blow fuse
that is designed to protect the
transformer from damage in the event
of a short in the -5V regulator
circuit. This fuse failure is very
deceiving because the problem is not in
the -5V circuit.
Close examination of the circuit
diagram shows that if one side of the
lamp socket is grounded, a high
current path will exist through the
transformer, F4, and one leg of BR3.
When changing the bulbs on the coin
door, it is quite easy to bump the
end of the lamp socket to the lip of the
door. If power is on, F4 blows.
