\Vlllams General lllunination Mod
by Todd Erickson
Note:
The game will be slightly
dimmer. (Here is a helpful hint
to use while shopping pins.
Install the new bulbs in the
playtield and place the used
ones in the head where they
are more accessible.) •
Many of the Williams pinballs have been burning out the general
illumination lamps prematurely. The #44 bulbs are rated at 3,000 hours
at 6.3 volts. Even a small over voltage will cut the life sharply. To
lengthen bulb life, it is necessary to lower the voltage. This is done by
the following change, using a lO0V 35 amp bridge rectifier screwed to
the sheet metal in the head for a heat sink.

OPERATORS!
MECHANICS!
Are you searching for a painless way to upgrade your ability to repair the
Electronic games you operate . . . the games you depend on for your
livelihood?
SAN DIEGO ARCADE SCHOOL ...
offers 46 hours of comprehensive , practical training in electronic amuse-
ment repair for mechanics and operators.
YOU DON'T NEED AN OSCILLOSCOPE ...
to be successful at repairing Solid-State games. The course stresses the
efficient use of test equipment like the Logic Probe and Digital Multimeter;
relatively inexpensive equipment that operators and mechanics can easily
afford .
IS THE COURSE EXPENSIVE?
Not really. The tuition fee of $350 .00 includes over $75.00 worth of
textbooks, databooks, and other materials!
San Diego Arcade School will not teach you how to repair a jukebox,
electromechanical pinball or vending machine. You will learn about diodes,
transistors, power supplies, electronic pinball, video games (including a
special session on video games that use the X-Y monitor system) , cross
referencing semiconductor replacement parts, using a logic probe, and
more.

1. Due to the large amount of play that many new
Stem pins are getting, a few of the plastic links on
the flippers are breaking. I recommend visually
inspecting the links for cracks while collecting.
2. On many new Midway games the test switch is
located where it may be bumped while taking the
cash box in and out. Bending the bracket back will
generally eliminate the problem.
3. On Williams pins that have intermittant problems,
replace the 12K cap on the power supply board.
The blue ones with T.I. on them generally have had
the most failures. I recommend replacing with a
higher voltage rating. Also, inspect for leaking cap
at random.
The part number often found on AMI parts is a
letter-number combination such as R-2179A. To
convert this to a stock number for ordering
purposes, use the following table:
Leading Letter
Last Letter
F= 2
H=3
L= 4
R=6
S = 7
Convert as follows:
Part number R-2179A
A= 1
B=02
C=03
0=04
Etc.
New style stock number 6-02179-01
Old style stock number 601-02179
Use the new style stock number to order.
Exidy ''SPECTAR" Program Update Mod
(11 A-1 to 11 A-2)
The 11 A-1 to 11 A-2 EPROM change allows the player to
see all nine of the playing fields in sequence during the
attract mode, instead of just the first playing field as viewed
with the 11 A-1. It also adds one final playing field for
advanced high scoring players.
NOTE: The 11 A-2 is a 5-volt only EPROM and cannot be
mixed with boards using 3 voltage EPROMS. If your
SPECTAR has 3 voltage EPROMS they must be replaced
with the 5-volt only type. Any questions concerning this
matter can be answered by contacting EXIDY Customer
Service Dept.
