"Sweet Adeline" is the title we have chosen for
the song being sung by the feline quintet. We
thought once of entitling the picture, "A Moonlight
Sonata." but we were not sure about the moonlight.
We also thought of using as a sub-title the ((notation :
"The Poetry Of Earth Is Never Dead."
This striking picture was taken by Lloyd G. Miller,
who was so kind as to grant Presto Music Times the
privilege of using it. Mr. Miller is a young Chica-
goan who delights in photographv. We congratulate
him on the cleverness of this picture and thank him
most sincerely for its use.

President Felder's Letter About
Proposed Tax on Musical Instruments
Canadian orchestras of late have been beset by
problems unknown to those in the United States,
some patrons and sponsors of the arts who in peace
times give lavishly, for the advancements of music,
during periods of international strife think this same
music an unnecessary drain on finances which might
better be diverted into war-time production. Cana-
dian orchestras must therefore constantly keep be-
fore such people in these days the indubitable fact
that music is as necessary as bullets in offsetting
the destructive forces let loose, and that, PARTICU-
LARLY in war-time, its encouragement and in-
spiration are vitally needed.
Much credit must go to Sir Ernest MacMillan,
conductor of the Toronto Symphany Orchestra, and
other Canadian conductors for their energetic leader-
ship in these trying days.
