Presto

Issue: 1939 2289

"W-where you goin' to take it?" Elias Hinkle asked.
"Down to the basement," Mr. Blow said. "The thing's
nothin' but a nuisance an' a disgrace to the store.
"Aw—don't do that," Elias pleaded. "The place wouldn't
be the same without the parlor organ. That organ's been
here pretty near ever since I went to work for your grand-
father."
"Much too long," Mr. Blow snorted.
"An' besides," pleaded Hinkle, "we can sell it any day now.
Eff Ginters said only last week, if wheat went to three dollars
he'd buy it."
"Wheat's never been that high," Blow said. "What Gin-
ters meant was, he's never goin' to buy it. Come on an'
gimme a hand."
"If you put much more stuff in the basement we won't
be able to turn around down there," Hinkle said.
"Makes no difference. Come on an' gimme a hand."
"What are you gonna do if a customer wants a parlor organ?
Run downstairs an' lug it up again?"
"Nobody wants to look at these parlor organs any more,"
said Mr. Blow. "Only Eff Ginters, an' he knows this one by
heart, an' maybe—maybe some antique shop—"
"There's an idea!" said Elias Hinkle. "Antique dealers!
Why can't we haul this parlor organ out to Miss Wimple's
Okie Tea & Antique Shoppe?"
"II we threw in the talkin' machine it'd make a nice deal."
Mr. Blow paused before announcing his decision. "Get a
truck, Elias. The biggest truck you can find!"
"Just for a little parlor organ?"
"Nope. For the whole stock. For every thin' in the store.
It all goes to Miss Wimple on consignment, an' we're goin'
to start over with new merchandise!"
"Gosh!" said Elias Hinkle.
"Yep," said Herbert Blow. "New merchandise. And new
methods. Believe you me, Eff Ginters isn't goin' to come in
here twice a week for a demonstration on a parlor organ this
next twenty years."
"Gosh!" Elias Hinkle repeated. "I guess the music busi-
ness is changin'."
"Yep," said Mr. Blow. "I guess it is."
