PRIZES FOR SONG TITLES
Just Published
A novel idea was brought out at Salt Lake City
during the spring festival there when a music inter-
est contest was one of the features and in which sub-
stantial cash prizes were given to the winners. A
window in each of the participating stores was trimmed
to suggest the title of a song and prizes were award-
ed to those persons who gave the most correct song
title to the displays in fifty windows which dis-
played. The prizes ranged from $10.00 to $200.00.
There were fifty merchants co-operating in the festi-
val. One display in each of the store windows being-
trimmed to suggest a song title.

A card on this page of Presto-Times announces a
new fox-trot song entitled, "When It's Apple Blos-
som Time in Indiana." The card says this song is
"A wonderful dance number."
Presto-Times is
pleased to confirm this statement of the advertiser
for the composition carries an unusually attractive
and appropriate melody, easy to sing, a good motif
for the dance and a rather haunting, but "catchy" air.
You will like it. Presto-Times commends you to
secure a copy from the publishers. Stone City Music
Company, Bedford, Indiana, or through your dealer.

Some weeks ago circular letters were sent to pub-
lishers of music, composers, copyright owners and
others interested in extending the sale of sheet music
and other musical publications which circular an-
nounced the formation of an organization intended to
aid persons interested against unfair practices
prevalent in the sheet music and musical publications
trade.
The last information from the promoters of this
affair comes from E. R. Berger, Flint, Michigan, who
is one of the parties interested in the movement re-
ferred to and who says that, "Pending United States
Government suit against the A. S. C. A. P. (American
Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), we
are holding our affairs in abeyance."
The Northwestern University School of Music,
Evanston, 111., announces its second annual Church
Choir Contest and Festival which takes place May 13,
14, 15 next. This affair brings out many interesting
things in music, musical publications and persons
identified with musical interests and is an interesting
event for the music trades as well as musical people
and the music profession.
The attempted advent of Ed. Wytin. noted
comedian, into the establishment of another broad-
casting chain to be known as the Amalgamated "Radio
System, was a serious disappointment in certain quar-
ters of the piano manufacturing industry, but to the
credit of Mr. Wynn he has struggled through the
debacle and is paying out accounts involved against
the business.
During the school vacation this moving-day season
exhibitions and recitals of music pupils will take place,
one of these at Kimball Hall, the last week in April,
sponsored by the Miessner System
The Lyon & Healy Branch Store at Evanston, 111.,
of which J. J. Numan is the manager, is now located
at 523 Davis street in the Northshore Hotel Building,
only a few doors from their former location.

CHICAGO-MADE HARPS LEAD THE
WORLD
Some time ago the well-known harpist, Alberto
Salvi, selected a Lyon & Healy concert harp to be
sent to his studio in St. Louis, Mo. Recently that
harp was purchased by a prominent St. Louis musi-
cian and noted harpist, Miss Lela R. Kraft. Miss
Kraft, who has been a resident of St. Louis for about
seven years is a professional harpist.
Another L. & II. harp of the concert type was re-
cently on exhibition at Lyon & Healy's prior to its
shipment to a noted artist in Switzerland, and is used
in the Symphony Orchestra of that city. This instru-
ment is priced at $5,000 while the one secured by Miss
Kraft of St. Louis was a $10,000 model.
A reference to the use of the harp in broadcasting
stations which recently appeared in the radio section
of the Chicago D'aily News, is worth repeating. In
this story of his regard for the harp, Mr. Gilchrist
says, "the harp sounded beautifully over radio; clear
and liquid. Why not the harp for the softer and
<|uieter radio music? Couldn't it be used in place of
the organ for such purposes? If you ever get a
chance to hear harp music on the air without accom-
paniment of other instruments think this idea over."
An interesting and jubilant gathering of managers
in the South Division of the Jenkins Music House
branch stores, recently met at Tulsa, Okla. Seven
branch stores were represented in this division of
the Jenkins Music House. Paul W. Jenkins of Kan-
sas City, vice-president, and W. P. Sutherland, gen-
eral branch store manager, were special guests. Okla-
homa City, Bartlesville, Joplin, Wichita, Seminole,
Fort Smith and Tulsa were represented.
J. P. Collins Company, 100 Summer street, Boston,
Mass., continue to specialize in "second-hands" and
advertise to buy and pay cash for this class of in-
struments.
The May Company, Cleveland, Ohio, carries a two-
column display advertisement on "Sensational Fac-
tory Close-Out Sale of Cable & Son Baby Grand."
Mrs. Ivy Richardson and Mr. Steve Miller have
purchased the Book and Music Store recenty owned
by George Horney at Kingman, Kansas.
J. H. Rigby is now the manager of the Schmoller
& Mueller Company's branch store at Grand Island,
Nebraska. Mr. Rigby has been associated with the
Schmoller & Mueller house a long time and is con-
sidered a very successful piano man.
Mayo M. Fischer, recently of Olivia. Minn., is open-
ing an exclusive music store at Redwood Falls,
Minn. His place of business in Redwood is in the
Fox Building. Mr. Fischer is a noted band leader
and will specialize in band and orchestral instruments,
sheet music and supplies but will carry a line of pianos
to meet the demand for upright and grand in-
struments.
Carl Kob and his wife, Mrs. F. C. Kob, have opened
a music store at Columbia, Mo. Mr. Kob has been
specializing in radios and has done some broadcasting.
R. T. Shelley's Music Store, Grinnell, Iowa, has
moved to a more attractive location on Broad street.
The Crawford Music Corporation has leased the
entire eleventh floor at 1619 Broadway, New York
City.
The new music store of Winters & Donaldson in
Pipestone, Minnesota, located on West Main street,
is now in full blast under the management of Mrs.
Winters and Mrs. Donaldson, the proprietors.

CORRESPONDENCE
INQUIRIES—REPLIES—MISCELLANEOUS COMMUNICATIONS
OVERING a period of several
years Presto-Times carried a de-
partment given over to answers to
correspondents requesting sundry
trade information. This depart-
ment bore the caption, "Where
Doubts Are Dispelled." The re-
plies and comments on various
suggestions brought out in this
correspondence attracted consid-
erable attention and were interest-
ing.
Since that feature was discon-
tinued information has been furnished correspondents
either by mail direct from Presto-Times' office or
letters turned over to parties who could give ex-
clusive instruction or could supply correspondents
with their requirements.
We again add this feature, giving the names of
writers only when permitted to do so, thus avoiding
certain criticisms and objections that had arisen in
connection with this feature before.
The letters and inquiries selected from an extensive
correspondence are published because they suggest
comment of general interest and information. Many
inquiries come to Presto-Times asking about things
that demand individual replies rather than to appear
in print and which if published would not be helpful
or constructive.

TUNING HAMMER INFORMATION WANTED
Please give me the address of the manufacturers of
the Hale tuning hammer, or address of company who
can supply the older models of the Hale hammer.
I do not like the octagon shaped rod or the method
employed in fastening the heads; they seem to be too
light and flimsy.
DAVID O. EGBERT,
Lewiston, Utah.
The Hale tuning hammer is made in Boston, Mass.,
but all models of this hammer are supplied by most
of the music supply houses such as, for instance,
American Piano Supply Company, New York and
Tonk Bros. Co., Chicago.

NAME TRANSFERS WANTED
Please tell us where we can get transfers or stencils
for a Lindeman & Son piano and who do you recom-
mend for making piano transfers. Also what is price
of the Buyers' Guide this year?
ORLANDO NACE & SON,
Independence, Mo.
You probably will be able to secure a Lindeman &
Son decalcomania transfer, if to be used on a genuine
Lindeman & Son piano, by addressing Lester Piano
Company, Philadelphia, Pa. There are several firms
making decalcomania transfers, among them the
Meyercord Company, Chicago; Palm Fechteler &
Company, New York.
The Buyers' Guide is still fifty cents per copy.

RADIOS WANTED
I have just engaged in the piano business, handling
mostly the Starr line. I want to add radios. Most
of the well-known makes, including RCA, Majestic,
Philco, Crosley, are sold by other dealers in this ter-
ritory. Where can I secure a line of low-priced
radios?
NORTH CAROLINA DEALER.

tion, 689 Fifth Avenue, New York, owners of the
Ampico.

Can you tell me where I may procure a treatise on
the mechanism and construction of the Electro-
Pneumatic pipe organ?
THOMAS J. SMITH,
Wheeling, W. Va.
The best work that we know of today is the one
written by William H. Barnes entitled, "The Con-
temporary American Organ," published by J. Fischer
& Bro., 119 W. 40th street, New York City. Some
of the manufacturers of great electric-pneumatic or-
gans furnish treatises on the electric-pneumatic organ
in connection with the catalog and publicity depart-
ment of their business. But Mr. Barnes' work is, we
believe, the best book of its kind today.

INQUIRY FOR PRACTICE CLAVIER
M. A. R., Charlestown, W. Va., says there are calls
for a piano and organ practice keyboard, and wants to
know where a practice clavier can be obtained.
The best practice clavier, known as the Virgil Prac-
tice Clavier, was first made in Peoria, the invention
of A. R. Virgil. It has been made for the past thirty
years in New York City. A small 4-octave clavier is
made by the A. L. White reed organ manufacturing
concern, Englewood avenue, Chicago. Loyd Loar,
proprietor of the Vivi-Tone Co., Kalamazoo, Mich.,
is the patentee of the invention intended for piano
practice which is called the Vivi-Tone Clavier. This
instrument is highly spoken of and this correspondent
will be interested in correspondence with the Vivi-
Tone Company.

PIANO BASS STRING INQUIRY
Will you kindly advise me where 1 can get in touch
with manufacturers of bass strings for pianos?
M. D. HUDSON MUSIC HOUSE,
Waco, Texas.
Your nearest supply house for bass wound piano
strings would be Schaff Piano String Company, Chi-
cago, or you could be supplied otherwise from Chi-
cago through the Tonk Bros. Company, 623 S.
Wabash avenue, Chicago.

NAMES OF PIANOS AND MANUFACTURERS
WANTED
Where can I get a list of all names and addresses of
pianos made at the present time and of piano manu-
facturers, also the names of pianos of various stencils,
and most important a list of names and addresses of
piano manufacturers now in the hands of receivers
or in liquidation or closing out?
S. ANGUS,
Los Angeles, Cal.
Probably your best way to secure the names you(
ask for is from piano directories but no regular music
trade directory has been published for several years
except the two so-called, "Piano Guides to Buyers,"
one of these by Presto Publishing Company, Chicago;
the other by Music Trades Company, New York.
These publications give quite complete lists of all
pianos and the Presto Buyers' Guide records prac-
tically all names used on pianos for many years past
and gives authentic estimates of all pianos now manu-
factured and on the market today. As to the names
of piano manufacturers who have more recently dis-
continued business, etc., probably such a record could
be obtained from any of the music trade papers.

INQUIRY FOR PIANO BUYING GUIDES
Can we secure copies of the Presto Buyers' Guide
to American pianos and Presto trade lists of music
dealers since 1923? We would like to know if later
editions have been published. Your directories have
been much used by the business men of Newark and
vicinity and we know that they receive wide publicity
in this way.
BEATRICE WINSER, Librarian,
The Public Library of Newark, N. J.
Presto Publishing Company, Chicago, will furnish
copies of the Buyers' Guide since 1920 and a copy of
the Piano Trade Lists, one issue of which has ap-
peared since 1920. Presto-Times will also go to this
correspondent regularly.
Two prominent music houses in particular are now
giving prominence in their newspaper advertising to
the "Huntington Grand," Hudson's Piano Depart-
ment. Detroit, and Hecht Brothers at their new piano
