ASKS AND SUGGESTS
"An inquiring correspondent" writing to Presto-
Times from New York says: "I have been thinking
that perhaps the East got 'the drop' on. Chicago in
the matter of a merger of piano manufacturing in-
terests* contemplated for Chicago and related in
Presto-Times some weeks ago. for there are several
locations in New York available for great output
under one roof and one big concern in the Bronx is
turning out pianos for many manufacturers who for-
merly made their own pianos in their own factories."
So far as Presto-Times learns, no definite arrange-
ments were made for a Chicago merger spoken of in
Presto-Times but it is not probable that the New
York factory referred to by this correspondent has
anything to do with the talked of Chicago combina-
tion.
A MOVING DAY EPISODE AT ST. CHARLES
Quite a "moving day" event has been going on of
late at St. Charles, an outer suburb of Chicago, where
are located the big Cable piano factory, the Globe
Musical Instrument Factory, the Operadio, manufac-
turers of loud-speakers, amplifiers and other radio
equipment, and recently a piano key recovering and
repair service owned and operated by Victor E
Nelson.
The moving day feature consisted of the Operadio
concern taking over the Globe Musical Instrument
Factory, which concern also occupies a floor of the
Cable piano factory. The Globe Company moved to
a part of the vacated Operadio building and are now
well established there, which they consider more con-
venient than their former location which they had oc-
cupied for many years.

The McMackin Piano Key Service. Des Moines.
Iowa, which added band instrument repairing, re-
modeling, polishing, etc., finds that line of business
growing steadily. Mr. McMackin tells Presto-Times
that he is now using a lacquer mixed in his own shop
that gives satisfaction in every way. This lacquer
when applied to brass makes the instrument a beau-
tiful yellow and old gold shade. Although there are gold
lacquers on the market, only a few are applied with
proper skill and careful treating of the instrument
before the work is done and the lacquer applied to the
instrument.
This lacquer finishing business, especially on trump-
ets and saxophones, is rapidly increasing. Saxophones
can be given a satin gold body finish with keys bur-
nished gold and other lines of brass instruments
finished "sinrilarly. The proper method of buffing an
instrument and getting it in first-class condition is the
success of his gold lacquer jobs. "Not all firms," he
says, "take the precaution necessary to get lasting
results."
Mr. McMackin invites correspondence in this line of
service at his shop and studio. He says: "I wish I
could gei in touch with dealers, bandmen and others
that have band instruments lying around and not
doing anybody any good. If some of these dealers
would take down these old instruments from their
shelves and send them to us we could return instru-
ments that would be salable and bring fifty per cent
more than they could have been sold for before our
refinishing and polishing process. We do a fine job
of polishing and lacquering a brass trumpet for about
$3.50, which includes pulling slides and putting the
valves in good condition, and then when the instru-
ments are thus made ready the lacquer is applied and
gives a job that sells the instrument." Mr. McMackin
has adopted a maxim well worth heading, "Not the
cheapest, but fine workmanship."
