HARP OF BITTER ROOT WOOD
Martin Jones of Charlos Heights, Mont., who was
a school teacher in the Philippines for ten years, with
four natives of those islands, gave a rare musical
entertainment at the Lions Club luncheon in Hamil-
ton, Mont., last month. An attraction of the program
was the native harp fashioned after the ancient Aeolian
design and made from Bitter Root wood by one of
the men. The harp stands about four feet from the
floor and the principal part of its frame was made
from a live cottonwood tree with bits of applewood
and pine boards completing the woodwork. Violin
and guitar strings and fishline make up the 31 strings
that the harp-maker has attached to the wood frame.
The wood is well turned and is so shaped as to form
an almost reproduction of the Aeolian harp. With the
guitar accompaniment the harp gave forth music not
unlike that of the Hawaiians and the program was a
credit to the musical ability and the ingenuity of the
little brown men.
A BEAUTIFUL SONG
A pretty and well arranged song has recently come
to the Presto-Times office from the publishers, Arthur
H. Stockwell. Ltd., 29 Ludgate Hill, London, E. C.
England, the title of which is "A Night in Venice."
This composition is the product of Miss Mary E.
Hinds, whose home is at Cookeville. Tenn. The song
is quite appropriately written in triple tune and the
THOMAS P. CLANCY
refrain makes an excellent waltz for light orchestra.
Two lines of "A Night in Venice," which read as

H. L. BARTHOLOMEE
H. L. Bartholomee, aged 33 years, eldest son of
C. H. Bartholomee, the well-known piano factory
superintendent, died on the morning of February 26
of influenza at his home. 1650 South Millard avenue,
Chicago, after a brief illness. Mr. Bartholomee had
been in business in association with his father for
some years conducting the Piano Repair Shop at 339
South Wabash avenue, Chicago.
IMPORTANCE OF GOOD MUSIC
The Griffith Piano Co.'s branch store at 211 North
Washington avenue, Scranton, Pa., in its advertising
speaks of the power of good music and the very great
influence of the music teacher in the following lan-
guage: "We all know that the tastes and preferences
of children are formed by the events in their daily
lives. Sometimes, though, we fail to attach enough
importance to the kind of music they learn to esteem
in early youth, and to the music teachers who strive
to guide their instinct for music in the right direction.
Yet, who would deny that the beauty of good music
finds a place for itself in young hearts and minds,
blossoming into a greater appreciation of the finer
things in life. And who can implant a real love and
understanding for music that is immortal better than
a competent music teacher? When we think of good
music we quite naturally think of a grand piano, for
of all musical instruments the grand piano has that
fullness and richness of tone we seek for in the rendi-
tion of a great composer's work."
