CAPEHART CHARGES
PATENT INFRINGEMENT
Fort Wayne Manufacturer Asks Federal Court to
Enjoin Cincinnati Concern.
Homer E. Capehart of Fort Wayne, president of the
Capehart Automatic Phonograph Corporation, and
others have filed suit in the United States District
Court at Cincinnati charging the Automatic Radio
Corporation of Cincinnati, with infringement of the
internationally known Ludwig M. Dieterich patents
for the manufacture of automatic coin-operated radio
receiving sets.
About 20 basic patents relating to the operation
of automatic coin-operated radio sets and including
what is known as a "system of distribution of intelli-
gence" are owned by the Capehart corporation. The
coin operated radio sets are manufactured for use in
hotels, restaurants and other public places. The
United States Court is asked to enjoin the Cincinnati
corporation from further infringements and to require
it to turn over to the Fort Wayne company for de-
struction all of the infringing sets.

SPRUCE FOR SOUNDING BOARDS.
Spruce is of course the universal wood for sound-
ing boards. While the majority of sound boards are
western spruce from Washington, the best for musi-
cal instruments comes from New York and New
England. It is taken only from the lower or butt end
of large logs, which must be grown on high land
in order to get the firm texture and fine grain neces-
sary for a sound board. It is then quarter-sawed
and air-dried, after which it is further conditioned
and manufactured into boards. About 5 per cent of
the original wood gets into fine sounding boards. The
supply of fine eastern spruce is becoming very scarce.
WIN TWO GULBRANSEN PRIZES.
Two beautiful new Gulbransen pianos were recently
awarded by the Music Lovers' Shoppe at 51 East
avenue, Rochester, N. Y., to Herbert V. Searles and
Miss Doris Short of that city, for the efforts in the
essay contest conducted by this well-known Roches-
ter music house. The contest was centered on "Why
the Study of Piano Music Will Benefit Every Child."
Mr. Searles was presented with the first grand prize, a
ond grand prize, a Gulbrausen upright piano. The
Music Lovers' Shoppe was crowded to capacity when

ADVERTISING KEEPS TRADE STURDY.
In his address to the business men of the nation
by radio at Washington a few days ago, Dr. Julius
Klein, assistant secretary of commerce, told them to
keep up their advertising now to insure against cur-
tailment of trade. He said in part: "Advertising,
considered as a whole, is one of the most potent of
business accelerations. It keeps goods moving. And
it inspires confidence. At this time any appreciable
letup in advertising would be unquestionably injuri-
ous. Good will is worth millions. Possessing it,
businesses flourish; without it, they may wilt. But
it is a fragile quality. It may sway and droop under
the veering winds of public opinion. Advertising can
keep it sturdy and upstanding."
Howard H. Vrooman of Watertown, N. Y., has
been appointed distributor of the Edison radio for
Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
The Associated Press says that Walter ("Death
Valley") Scott is about to erect a $200,000 broadcast-
ing station on his palatial estate near Tonopah, Nev.
