DISTRIBUTORS PLEDGE
PAN=AMERICAN POLICY
Rigid Rules Regarding Discounts on Band
Instruments Are Agreed to at
Elkhart Meeting.
F. C. Howard of J. W. Jenkins & Sons, Kansas
City, Mo.
M. H. Berlin of the Chicago Musical Instrument
Company, Chicago, 111.
John L. Luellen of the Continental Music Com-
pany of Chicago and San Francisco.
George Sundberg of the H. C. Schultz, Inc., of
Cleveland and Detroit.
Paul Monnig of Tonk Brothers Company, Chicago.
Charles Sonfield of C. Bruno & Son, Inc., New
York City.
Pan-American instruments are also distributed b
the Southern California Music Company, Los Angeles,
but a representative of this company was unable to
be present.
The distributors were entertained at a dinner given
at Hotel Elkhart the evening of January 8.
National distributors of Pan-American instru-
ments, at their annual meeting at the Pan-American
factory, Elkhart, Ind., January 8-9, pledged a more
rigid policy regarding discounts on band instruments.
To carry out this policy, distributors agreed to sell
instruments only to bona fide dealers with stores.
This wr'll eliminate the serious condition which has
heretofore existed in which wholesale discounts have

visors and other school authorities.

piano trade east or west, north or south, than F. H.
B. Byrne, advertising manager of Chickering & Sons,
The distributors also recognized the need for a
closer tie-up between the distributor and the dealer.
They recognized the recent tendency of distributors,
not only of musical merchandise but of all lines of
merchandise, to do more promotional work for the
manufacturer. Specifically, Pan-American distribu-
tors will cooperate in 1929 in placing window trans-
fers in the dealers' windows, distributing counter
cards and complete window displays of Pan-Ameri-
can instruments.

he has heen at home sick for several days past. It
seems that Mr. Byrne has been a victim of the
weather, for what began as a bad cold developed into
something like pleurisy. On the day of Presto-
Times correspondent's call—Tuesday of this week—
it was reported that he was on the mend and that
he might be looked for at his office in a few days.

PHONOGRAPH IS TEACHER.
Roy Smeck, accomplished and versatile performer
on stringed instruments and a regular feature on
WOR, taught himself by turning on the phonograph
and plucking in accompaniment at the strings of a
ukulele. By the time that instrument wore out he
was ready to tackle a guitar, then a banjo, etc., etc.
Suggestions are offered to followers in his footsteps.
Use only the records of the best artists—as you want
to exceed them, or, at the worst, equal them in ex-
ecution.
