NEW YORK LETTER
B. K. SETTERQREN VISITS
NEW^ORK OFFICE
(Continued from page 7.)
East Thirteenth street, New York, has been good but
it could be better. Neither of these famous concerns
has any cause to worry, for their lines are standard,
their reputations for square dealing are well-known
and where there is any business to be had they get a
fair share of it.
Kranich & Bach in Metropolitan Territory.
"We are working the metropolitan territory thor-
oughly now," said Edward A. Ripper, office manager
for Kranich & Bach, 235 East 23rd street, New York.
"By metropolitan territory I mean the whole dis-
trict within a circle of 50 miles from the store or
farther. And we are getting some results, as we
deserve to, with our fine line of instruments. If we
can only get people to come to the store to see
these beautiful pianos, we surely make sales."
Louis P. Bach, head of the house, who is under his
physician's guidance concerning his activities, does
not come to his office in New York very often, but
is living quietly at his beautiful home in Port Ches-
ter, Conn. His doctor, it is understood, forbids busi-
ness callers to see him.
Indications of a Prosperous Year.
Piano men may take heart from the condition in
the steel trade—always a basic industry. Steel out-
put this year has already passed the high rate of
December last.
An All-Russian Program.
Russian musicians gave an all-Russiau program on
the night of December 9 in Town Hall, New York
city, where the Kedroff Quartet sang and Maria
Safonoff played the piano before a good-sized audi-
ence. Messrs. Denissoff and Kassakoff, tenors; N.
N. Kedroff, barytone, and C. N. Kedroff, basso, sang
numbers by Tcherepnin, Borodin and Tchaikovsky,
folk-songs arranged by Moussorgsky and the bary-
tone Kedroff, and other numbers of the latter's ar-
rangements.
T. L. Lutkins in Canada.
T. L. Lutkins, the leather wholesaler and producer,
40 Spruce street. New York, returned from a busi-
ness trip to Philadelphia on Friday of last week. On
that day half an hour after his return, Presto-Times
correspondent met him. He finds conditions improv-
President of the B. K. Settergren Company,
Bluffton, Ind., Makes Optimistic Predic-
tions for Piano Sales for 1929.
B. K. Settergren, president of the B. K. Settergren
Company of Bluffton, Ind., who is visiting at his
New York office, 127 West 43rd street, said to the
Presto-Times correspondent:
"We had a most wonderful year; in fact, our busi-
ness for 1928 exceeded any other year by 20 per cent.
It is too early in 1929 to make a prediction on what
the result will be this year. But that it is on the
upward incline is a self-evident fact."
Mr. Settergren is a man who believes that one
must be inspired by his business in order to make
sales or get new business. He is not the kind that
gets stage fright or sees bogies in the dark or who
regard rival lines in the sense of enemies. He looks
upon the rad : o, the washing machine or any other line
of easy-payment products as stimulants to the piano
business and to piano salesmen. So he is not look-
ing with mournful eyes upon what has not been
done, but is turning his face forward optimistically,
determined to sell more pianos in 1929 than ever
before.
Mr. Settergren's territory is the Uniited States.
He has not yet planned an immediate trip, but that
he will make some extensive forays into good piano
territory in the next few weeks goes without saying.
Just now he is working nearby territories in the
metropolitan district of New York city. He makes
his calls in the forenoons, comes in and writes his
correspondence, and in the afternoon he has some
time left to do some constructive thinking about the
next day's or the next week's work.
OFFERS PIANO SERVICE.
After two and one-half years of piano work in
South Bend, Ind , Frank F. King has opened a piano
service of his own in River Park, Ind. "Your piano
troubles can be easily solved by me at my home" is
the invitation in the local newspaper.
ing. But there is room for lots of improvement yet.
On Monday of this week—January 14—he set out
for a trip through Canada. Toronto and Montreal are
on the itinerary of this business trip.

INDIANAPOLIS TRADE
But Interruption Is Only Temporary and
Pleasant Reaction Is Seen in Lively
Sales of Pianos.
On next Monday the Indianapolis Music Merchants
will hold their first meeting of the new year in the
Board of Trade dining room, after a noonday lunch-
eon. Mr. Hook, president of the organization, has
arranged a very interesting program.
Steinway Sales Good.
The Pearson Piano Company reports a favorable
business, and especially from the branch houses.
Anderson, Ind., particularly sends encouraging re-
ports, which is no doubt due to the fact that at this
time that city is booming and humming with activity.
In Indianapolis Steinway & Son's instruments
are going good, with the Steck Duo-Art running
close. This company has had an active business in
the higher grade pianos for some time passed and
from reports it is going to continue.
On last Monday Rudolph Reuter, one of the Stein-
way artists appeared at the Propylaeum in a morn-
ing recital where the Steinway grand was used.
Rachmaninoff appeared at the Murat Theater on Sun-
day, the 13th, where he played before a large audi-
ence of music lovers, and the artist used his own
Steinway grand piano.

with the thermometer registering around zero, and
