side that wins. At his headquarters, 415-19 West

ground, lo use a figure of speech, booking his orders
carefully. His New York place of business is with
Steinhaus & Co., his eastern agents, at 122 Fifth ave-
nue, where the Amco benches can be seen.
What Are the Proper Grades to Place in Stock
Should Be Determined in Time.
The musical merchandise dealer builds his business
to endure when he builds on quality. There are too
many in the business who do not realize that fact;
that there is no real market for shoddy musical in-
struments.
The man launching in the musical merchandise
business anywhere estimates the community if he has
the requisite business sense. An observation of the
community should enable a man to determine
the character of its musical instrument requirements.
Of course the dealer who could judge the demands
of his trade to a certainty would be enviable. But
one can apply certain rules governing the business
of buying and selling. Experience, plus certain
sound rules of common sense and the gift of obser-
vation will effect good results.
In opening a business no one can lay down hard
and fast rules for his guidance in buying. Each
dealer must gage his problems from his own angle.
The man in a high class residential section will find
his demands entirely different from the man who
caters to a large foreign born population in a work-
ing class neighborhood. But no matter what the
difference may be the dealer who studies his possible
customers must succeed.
DUCO FINISHED XYLOPHONE.
The showing of a Marimba xylophone in a new
combination of Duco colors is a feature this week at
the Du Pont Products Exhibit on the Boardwalk at
Atlantic City. The frame and end pieces of the in-
strument are finished in royal buff Duco and the
metal parts are done in lustro-gold which gives the
effect of gold plating. It is stated that this instru-
ment is also finished in two other new color combina-
tions which consist of Nile green and gold and man-
darin red and gold. Another feature of this display
is the showing of a musical dinner chime with a
mahogany base finished in Duco. The instruments
shown were manufactured by J. C. Deagen, Inc.,
of Chicago.
BETTER TRADE AFTER ELECTION.
The accompaniment of an election year always has
been a depression in trade. This depression, whether
naturally due to economic laws which nobody but
the statisticians even pretend to understand, or due
to a forced condition just to give the political boosters
and defamers something to spout about, generally
gets around once in four years. And immediately
after election there is generally a very lively spurt
in business. L. D. Cowen, head of the American
Piano Bench Manufacturing Company, who was
called upon by a Presto-Times representative on Fri-

MORE INVENTIONS TO COME.
J. Clarke Hagey, patent attorney and technical ex-
pert along the lines of musical instrument inventions
and improvements, ninth floor of the Cable Building,
57 East Jackson boulevard, Chicago, has been in-
vestigating some of the more intricate developments
of automatic pianos, reproducing pianos and radio
recently. To a Presto-Times representative on Mon-
day of this week Mr. Hagey said that there are doz-
ens of unexplored paths in these lines for the in-
ventor to enter and tread—new and unopened fields
of investigation that have not been experimented
upon because the expense has been considered as too
great. Just now Mr. Hagey is doing a lot of work
for Zenith Radio while not neglecting his regular
customers in the automatic piano and other patent-
able devices. A half-hour with him would convince
anyone, however skeptical, of the wonderful future
there is for the piano and other instruments of music.
