A VISIT TO THE
MILLER SHOPS
Many Interesting Things and Processes to Be
Seen at the Laboratory of This Indian-
apolis Establishment for Key Re-
adjusting, Rebushing, Etc.
In the highly specialized forms of skillful work-
manship which industrial science has found necessary
to cajl into existence for the performance of its func-
tions, none are more interesting than the things that
are done and to be witnessed in the laboratory of
dealers from all over the country with their requests,
much work comes to Mr. Frield Miller personally as
to the man with the reputation for special knowledge.
A Construction Expert.
Anyway, he is an expert on key-bed construction
and key assembling. Oftentimes when the whole key-
bed is sent to him in order to meet the requirements
of the dealer he must practically reconstruct the whole
outfit, cutting away parts, readjusting, fitting and
shaping much as a tailor fits a suit of clothes to
an individual. But when it is done the part goes
back as good as new.
Doctor of the Keys.
If a degree in recognition of his attainments were
grantable, we would suggest conferring upon Mr.
Miller the title of Doctor of Key Readjustment and
Alignment.
Yes, it was a very interesting place to visit—to see
how the old could be made new, and that done with-
out the ingrafting of goat glands, without sewing on
patches, but by simple wood and metal surgery,
directed by the art gained in the school of experience
and by digits trained to deft movements.
And this business of Frield Miller & Company has
been built up year by year until its founder and sus-
tainer finds his trade growing beyond his dreams and
his recompense in continuous friendships and plenty
to do.
Special Tools and Machinery.
The shops are very interesting. Its tools and
machinery are mostly individual—unique appliances
used for readjustment, mostly of Mr. Miller's own
invention, some patented, others not. But not an
unnecessary device in this establishment where every-
thing is co-ordinated to the studied needs of the re-
pairs or adjustments to be made.
Grew Out of a Need.
It is these needs of the customers that have built
business for Mr. Miller, just as the demand for some-
thing by a number of people always brings that some-
thing into existence. Backward communities don't
demand good roads; they don't get them. Backward
peoples don't demand good government; they don't
get it. The people of the United States demanded
higher standards cf living than those of Europe;
they have it, p!us.
Mr. Miller took advantage of the demand for his
line of work. He gets plenty of work.
FRIELD MILLER.
FRANK HOOD'S SHORT TRIP.
Frield Miller & Co., 3335 North Illinois street, In-
dianapolis, Ind.
A late visit to this laboratory by a Presto-Times
man proved to be an enlightenment and a treat. He
met here Mr. Miller, Sr., who is known far and wide
in the trade as an expert in piano key making and
renewing. Aside from the routine of ordinary cus-
tom work, coming in and shipping out of work for
Frank M. Hood, of the Schiller Piano Company,
was in Indianapolis, Ind., on Wednesday of this week
and went from the Hoosier metropolis to Mount
Carmel, 111. He is expected back in the Chicago
offices of the company on Tuesday of next week.
President Edgar B. Jones of the Schiller Piano Com-
pany, was at the Chicago office on Wednesday of
this week.

Samuel F. Crowther, a Tampa, Fla., musician, laid
claim to the world's piano marathon championship
