That school bands are of paramount importance in
the advancement of music is the firm opinion of John
Philip Sousa, the famous band leader and composer.
Tn a recent interview he said:
"Among the events in my life that have made a
deep impression on me was the recent High School
Band Contest given by the National Society for the
Advancement of Music at Joliet, Illinois. The Joliet
Band ^he two previous years had won the champion-
ship, one year at Fostoria and the following year at
Council Bluffs, and, of course, were looked upon as
formidable factors in the race. I was one of the
judges, Edwin Franko Goldman and Captain O'Neill
of Canada were the other two. The playing of the
Joliet, the Senn Band of Chicago, and the Modesto
Band of California were unusually good and showed
that they had received excellent training.
"After a week of hearing a great number of these
bands, the judges awarded first place to the Joliet
Band, second to the Senn of Chicago, and third to
the Modesto of California, and the markings of the
judges belween these three bands were very close.
The town went wild with excitement and you would
have thought it was the election of a popular favor-
ite to the Presidency instead of a contest between
high school boys and girls of the matter of which
was the best band. Sleep was out of the question
that night, for the whole town was roaring, shouting,
etc., over the great honor that had befallen Joliet.
The ceremony closed wi;h a massed band concert
under my direction, in which somewhere between
2,500 and .3,000 high school bandsmen and bands-
women took part."

EDISON VISITS DEARBORN, MICH.
Thomas A. Edison participated in the cornerstone
laying ceremonies at Dearborn, Mich., on Tuesday
of this week at the beginning of a large museum
which is to be erected by Henry Ford in his "Ancient
Village" as a monument to the electrical wizard.
Its site is on a plot of ground just north of Dearborn.
In addition to the early working models of Edison's
inventions, the building, to be known as the "Edison
museum," will house his laboratory tools, notebooks
and other paraphernalia used during the years when
he was perfecting the telephone, motion picture and
other devices.

TOLEDO SCHOOL MUSIC.
Music in the Toledo high schools will continue to
play an important part in the high school curriculum,
it is announced. Clarence R. Ball will remain as
head of high school music and announces the fol-
lowing items of interest for the coming year. The
four high school orchestras will continue under the
direction of Miss Bessie Werum. G. V. Sutphen will
continue as director of high school bands. A new
band at the new Woodward high school will be
organized. Applied music will be given as formerly
under the direction of Mr. Ball. A few changes have
been made in requirements and studies. All students
must take harmony this year.
RADIO DEVELOPMENTS.
A number of basic principles involved in radio re-
ceiving apparatus were known before the advent of
broadcasting. The first real development came when
