COMPLETES SCHUBERT SYMPHONY.
Kurt Atterberg, a Swedish composer, has won
the £2,000 offered by the Columbia Graphophone
Company for completing Schubert's "Unfinished Sym-
phony" or composing a work in the Schubert tradition.
Atterberg, is forty, conductor of the Stockholm
Orchestra and president of the Swedish Society of
J Composers. His symphony will shortly be performed
in London. Five hundred musicians from twenty-six
countries entered, and prizes amounting to £2,000
have already been awarded for the best works sub-
mitted from each of the ten zones. The winning work
is a symphony in C major. No completion of the
"Unfinished" was in the competition finals.
FUTURE RUBBER PRODUCTION.
Hoskins does not attempt to predict just how soon
that big industrial achievement will be accomplished,
he is positive as to the ultimate. He believes that the
progress of scientific development will form an in-
tensely interesting part of the coming World's Fair.
"INVASION OF BELGIUM."
The first nation to suffer after the firing of the
shot in Sarejevo which set the world at war, was
Belgium. Over-run by the relentless advance of the
German -armies, stampeded almost before it was aware
of what was happening, the valiant little nation stirred
itself into action and fended off what then seemed
inevitable defeat. The activities of the heroic armies
and citizens of Belgium during this crisis are pictured
in "The Invasion of Belgium," which will be shown
at The Playhouse, 410 South Michigan avenue, during
the week of August 12, in conjunction with Lon
Chancy in his greatest success, "The Unholy Three,"
a drama of the underworld.
"Are we going to make rubber? Certainly! It
will not be exactly the same as nature hands us
through the rubber tree. It will be better, and exactly
what industry needs." William Hoskins, Ch'cago
chemical engineer, prominent member of the Ameri-
George C. Ross, music dealer, 4666 Frankford ave-
can Chemcial Society, thus states one of the probabil-
ities in the display of science and chemistry at the nue. Philadelphia, has added a music roll and small
goods department.
