must surely have inherited that faculty of quiet dig-

playing of her grand-uncle. She first appeared in
public as a violinist in Vienna at the age of thirteen,
when she met with an immediate and remarkable
success. She subsequently toured Austria, Italy,
France and Germany, and in 1913 went to reside
permanently in London.

THE AMPICO IN THE
GAVEAU PIANO OF PARIS
Maurice Dumesnilk's Renditions on American
Instrument Evokes Praises of Its Mechan-
ical and Artistic Values from Critics.
The Gaveau is one of the several great European
pianos in which the Anipico is now obtainable. Its
introduction to the music lovers and critics of Paris
was accomplished at a soiree at the beautiful Salle
Gaveauc last month at which the playing of Maudice
Dumesnil was heard in direct comparison to its re-
production by the Ampico. The demonstration was
extensively reviewed by the press which unanimously
acclaimed the Ampico as the perfect reproducing
instrument.
L. Leroy, in reviewing the concert for Le Gaulois
observes: "The dominion of automatic music, which
at the present time it is no longer possible to ignore,

the Baldwin piano with that of my old Berganzi

me by having such a piano to assist me in my re-
citals.—Yelly d'Aranyi."
It is a curious coincidence that this remarkable girl
should be the grandniece of that king of violinists—
the master artist, Joseph Joachim. Certainly some
vital spark has vouchsafed her virile art, and she

the playing of the virtuoso who entrusted his inter-
pretation to the roll."
The music critics of all the Paris papers wrote in
similar vein.
The limited seating capacity of the Gaveau hall
made it impossible to receive all who wished to hear
this interesting demonstration of the Ampico so that
three additional recitals were subsequently arranged
so that all those who desired to hear the demonstra-
tion might do so. Similar demonstrations with Mr.
Dumesnil were held at the American University Club,
Salle des Fetes du "Journal," Cercle de l'Union Ar-
tistiques, Cercle Internallie, Salle des Quatuors and
other places in Paris and its environments. The re-
cital is invariably prefaced by short remarks by Mr.
Dumesnil explaining the mechanism and its value to
the contemporary pianists in preserving their art for
posterity and its universal application to music lovers
to whom it brings the whole repertoire of the piano
played by the greatest artists available.

NEW CONN SYMPHONY FLUTE
Letter from Famous Flutist of the Cincinnati Sym-
phony Orchestra Cites Its Merits.
A most convincing mark of merit for the new
Conn Symphony Flute is a letter to C. G. Conn,
Ltd., from A. E. Ferboque, celebrated, flutist of
the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, of which Fritz
Reiner is conductor. Besides playing in the orches-
tra Mr. Ferboque is also on the faculty of the Cin-
cinnati Conservatory of Music. This is what he
says in a letter to James F. Boyer, secretary of
C. G. Conn, Ltd.:
"Dear Mr. Boyer: I have just received the new
Symphony Flute, the 100-O, and I want you to
know I think it is a most excellent instrument.
"I find the scale as near perfect as it is humanly
possible to make it, it speaks remarkably well in
the low register, while the high is soft and clear.
"It is indeed an instrument to be praised and
should be played by all who desire to attain a per-
fect technique, as the improvements you have made
help a great deal to master the flute."
strengthening its position, in the control of automatic
radio, has purchased Heath Patent No. 1,638,734,
British Patent No. 257,138, Canadian Patent No. 264,-
391, French Patent No. 607,436. Belgium Patent No.
331,166, and United States Patent Re. No. 17,002.
There are also seven other patents controlled by
Zenith pending in the patent office. The Zenith
Radio Corporation has delayed acting upon any of
the applications from its competitors for licenses,
until the negotiations for the above patents were con-
summated.

WHAT CHRYSLER SALESMEN DO
The sales-getting schemes of other trades offer
certain suggestions for the sales manager and deal-
ers of the music business. The salesmen of the
Chrysler-Illinois Company, for instance, were organ-
ized into camps for a spring drive just closed and
the continuous persistence of the sales efforts of
individuals are recorded in "Punch," the official paper
for the dealers and salesmen.
There were prizes in great number with a top
prize of $500 for the salesman with the biggest per-
centage against quota.
"Punch—Pep—Perseverance—Profits — Prominence
and Prosperity" is the long slogan full of meaning
which was inscribed on a banner at a meeting of
camps at the Lake Shore Athletic Club, Chicago, last
week. "Punching the Board" was the great event of
the evening. It is the exciting episode in which the
salesmen register their standing on sales and the
cash prize rewards therefor.
