BANJOS IN SPRING TRADE
J. R. McCarthy, Advertising Man for William
L. Lange, Banjo Manufacturer, Tells of In-
teresting Peculiarities of the Industry.
April is about the last of the early spring clean-up
months for selling banjos to the itinerant p'ayers who
make a business of entertaining people on vacations
in the north woods and on summer yachting cruises,
according to J. R. McCarthy, advertising manager for
William L. Lange, manufacturer of banjos since
1X97, at 225 East 24th street, New York. Mr. Lange
manufactures Paramount. Orpheuni, Super-Orpheum
and Langstile banjos. Mr. McCarthy is a wide-awake
man of the younger generation who watches the
trend of the times and takes advantage of the oppor-
tunities the present day opens up.
"The vogue of the individual banjoist entertainer to
people of means and leisure at resorts—southern
points in winter and northern points in summer—is
passing," said Mr. McCarthy to I'resto-Times corre-
spondent on Friday. "More banjos are sold now for
use in orchestras and other forms of ensemble-play-
ing and for accompaniments to singers and not so
many to the itinerant entertainer, who still persists in
large, although apparently decreasing, numbers. Our
heaviest selling period for the first half of the year
is drawing to a temporary subsidence, but it will liven
up again in a few weeks."
