markable musical organ-
ization is directed by
Miss Bobby Grice. Every
member of the organiza-
tion is a versatile artist,
many of them doubling
on various instruments.
CONDEMNS TAX ON RADIO
Secretary of the Radio Protective Association Tells
How It Would Result in Injustices.
Any effort to tax radio listeners—even if only for
the support of the radio commission—will result in
injustices and inequalities, that are almost certain to
be followed by efforts to impose taxes on listeners to
support broadcasting stations and eventually pay
heavier patent royalties than are already being paid
by the public, according to L. A. Nixon, eastern sec-
retary of the Radio Protective Association.
In discussing the proposal of Representative Will
R. Wood, chairman of the house sub committee on
appropriations, who suggested that radio receiving
sets be taxed to provide revenue for the Federal
Radio Commission, Mr. Nixon pointed out the ex-
treme difficulties of collecting a head tax from listen-
ers as is attempted in Canada and England. "Because
of the very smallness of the tax that might be
assessed the individual it will be difficult of collec-
tion," he said.

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT
Use of Popular Song in Radio Program in Minneap-
olis Basis of Suit.
Use of popular songs in commercial radio pro-
grams is asserted to be an infringement of copyright,
in a suit filed in the Federal District Court, Minne-
apolis, last week.
The action was started by Gene Buck of New
York, president of the American Society of Com-
posers, Authors and Publishers, and is against Dr.
George W. Young, an optometrist and jeweler, who
operates station WDGY of Minneapolis.
The complaint contends that Dr. Young's station
used "My Blue Heaven" in a program on Dec. 20.
Preceding and following the song the announcer is
alleged to have said: This is station WDGY, oper-
ated by Dr. Young's jewelry store. Dr. Young will
save you 20 per cent at his store."
Alleging that use of the song in such an adver-

Greater Interest in Musical Merchandise Shows in
New Stores and Old Ones.
The Wolfe Music Co. has opened a store in Kent,
Ohio, and is showing leading makes of talking ma-
chines, pianos and radios. The store is located in a
newly completed building in a downtown district.
The memorial to William Vincent Wallace, the
Irish composer, of whose works "Maritana" is per-
liaps the best known, which has been designed and
executed by William Charles May, the sculptor, will
be ready for the unveiling ceremoney in his native
city of Waterford on March 11, the anniversary of
his birth in 1812.
A. H. Stockwell, Ltd., London, has published ''A
Guide to Song Writing," by Mrs. G. Hubi-Xewcombe.
There is a whole volume of advice in the author's
opening words, which could well be taken to heart by
the writers of many lyrics, which unfortunately man-
age to appear in print. "Don't attempt it," says Mrs.
I lubi-Newcombe, "unless you feel within you the
"Inspiration,' the 'Divine-afflatus' to 'voice' and to
give expression to your longings and your aspira-
tions."
Publisher Moves.
Hamilton S. Gordon, a publisher located for main'
years at 141-5 West Thirty-sixth street, Xew York
city, moved last week to new quarters at 33-35 East
Twenty-first street. The firm has many old-time
hits in its catalog, such as "Silver Threads Among
the Gold," "A Son of the Desert Am 1," and others.
Gordon's Graded Piano Course and miscellaneous
standard and sacred music, is. one of the older firms
in the standard field. The new address will afford
spacious quarters on the seventh floor of the building.
The telephone number has been changed to Algon-
quin 3462.
When Carnegie Hall, at 57th street and 7th ave-
nue, was founded by Andrew Carnegie in 1890 and
dedicated the following year, many predicted that
the music center of Xew York would not move that
far northward. But Carnegie Hall today is in the
very center of the musical instrument and theater
district.
