PERFECTION BENCHES
Novelty in Design, Thoroughness in Construc-
tion, Taste in Finish Distinguish Admirable
Line Produced by Perfection Furniture Co.
The Perfection benches of the Perfection Furniture
Company, Chicago, possess the qualities that entitle
them to a name that so clearly suggests merit. The
name "Perfection" was selected for a purpose. Presi-
dent F. S. Smith, of the Perfection Furniture Co.,
believed that a firm name full of ambitious meaning
would be a reminder to everybody of the aims of
the company, to produce only perfect types in all
products.
The splendid line of piano benches of the Perfec-
tion Furniture Co., 1514-1520 Blue Island avenue, sets
a standard. It is distinct in many ways, notably in
the originality of the designs. And added to origi-
nality in design the benches have the quality of un-
questioned merit in materials, sturdiness of construc-
tion and dignity of line.
A standing invitation to out-of-town dealers while
visiting Chicago is to visit the modern, efficiently-
equipped daylight factory where the surroundings
are conducive to the production of the best models.
How the company has kept pace with the newest
demands in finish is a fact made plain to visitors.
It is an evidence of the company's alertness. Novel-
ties in finish are necessities with the piano dealer
offering benches and the Perfection Furniture Com-
pany, in this respect, provides a line that facilitates
bench sales bv the dealer.
MAKING PIANO VARNISHES.
Piano varnishes are made from a fossil gum called
kauri. The best of all varnishes are made from gum
such as Kauri, Zanzibar, vanilla, rosin and others.
The gums are assorted and melted, oils are combined,

with the addition of some metallic driers to assist
the drying properties. Then they are filtered and a
thinner, turpentine or a turpentine substitute is
added. In making piano varnish the Kauri gum is
heated and combined with treated linseed oil and usu-
ally some tung oil. The usual proportion is 53 per
cent gum and 47 per cent oil and driers.

BEST CANE FOR REEDS.
Every saxophone and clarinet player is interested
in getting the best reed obtainable and, of course,
the manufacturers are always anxious to supply the
music dealers with the best. Why one reed may
prove unsatisfactory after a short period of use and
another continue serviceable for a long time may be
accounted for as much in the source of supply of
the cane as in the processes of manufacture. The
cane used for reeds takes three years to grow, and
after it is cut it is given another two years to thor-
oughly dry, which makes a five-year process. The
best cane comes from the Var, near the Mediterra-
nean, in the south of France. Cane grown in rich
ground with a subsoil kept damp by filtration of the
sea, is the best for reeds.
Musical merchandise is carried by Guy C. Haw-
kins who recently opened a music store in La Salle,
