JAZZ. WHAT IS IT?
They say we've invented some music, our own.
I've heard and I'm sorry I cannot condone.
Once I loved music, but if Jazz is the best,
Out where they build boilers for me will be rest.
They take a great melody, and chop it up fine,
Then beat it and bang it, each beautiful line.
So they jangle its tones, cans falling pell mell,
With a moaning and groaning, a shrieking death
knell.
Native American they say, and I'm blamed,
If that is American then I am ashamed;
If that is the best our composers can do
We should throw up our hands and admit we are
through.
You hear them play them, a dozen or more,
And every one played is the same o'er and o'er.
You cannot distinguish one tune from the other,
It's noise, and more noise, One just like the other.
No sweet tender notes, no soul stirring strain;
Just a wrangle and jangle, again and again.
Till it seems the ear will split from the noise
And the weird doleful sounds the tormentor employs.
The Last Rose of Summer a melody has,
What would it sound like to sing it in Jazz?
Or a mother who sings her baby to sleep,
If she tried it in Jazz, it would make the kid weep.
Where did we get it? Well, now to begin,
The Devil one day, had a hole to dig in,
He found some tin cans, some glass and some yells,
Some shrieks and some moans, and some rusty cow
bells.
He said "This is awful, I can't stand the razz,
A man's character is the basis of his credit, He pitched it up here, and we called it Jazz.

FAMOUS SONG WRITER DIES.
Charles Marshall, who composed the song, "I Hear
You Calling Me." for John McCormack, died on De-
cember 11 at Wembley, England. He was seventy
years old. The words of the song were written by
Harold Lake, of the editorial staff of the Daily Ex-
press, London. Mr. McCormack, who was en route
to Southampton aboard the Aquitania, did not arrive
in time for the funeral.
