GALA WEEK IN CHICAGO OPERA
Great Performance for New Year's Eve Will Have
Unusual Features.
The Chicago Civic Apera's gala New Year's Eve
bill, "Die Fledermaus," otherwise "The Bat," expected
to be one of the most spectacular performances ever
produced by the company on this annually brillian
occasion, will preface a week of lavish entertainment
at the Auditorium as the lyric season enters upon its
last month.
The company's decision to depart from custom in
producing an operatta on New Year's Eve, in full
harmony with the spirit of festivity marking this
night, and ni accord with a custom generally favored
in European opera houses, is responsible for the in-
troduction of the most popular creation of Johann
Strauss, the waltz king, to be done with all the polish
and splendor marking the productions of its regular
grand opera repertoire.
It will be the first time that a Chicago opera cast
has been called upon to speak dialogue—for "The
Bat" is operetta in the fullest sense of the word. In
addition, an English translation has been especially
prepared, and the work has been magnificently cast.
The cast will include Rosa Raisa, Irene Pavloska,
Charles Hackett, Forrest Lamont, Giacomo Rimini,
Alice d'Hermanoy, Lucille Meusel, Jose Mojica, Lodo-
vico Oliviero, Virgilio Lazzari and Chase Baromeo.
Henry G. Weber will conduct the gala performance,
for which special Xew Year's Eve prices will, as
usual, prevail.
GULBRANSEN ROLLS CUT
IN CHICAGO FACTORY
Oscar H. Elmergreen, who has been conducting
a musical instrument repair shop on West Fourth
street, Davenport, la., for the past five wears, has
opened a new store at 321 Harrison street, handling
a general music stock.
Quick Work in Transporting and Setting Up Plant
Reported by Roll Corporation.
Eight days after the first machinery reached Chi-
cago from New York, the Gulbransen Music Roll
Corporation was cutting rolls. The roll business has
been established on the third floor of the Gulbransen
factory building at Chicago and Sawyer avenues,
with a large roll stock in the adjoining main factory
building.
The quarters have been found ideally fitted to the
production of music rolls and there is every indica-
tion that the business can be carried out in these
quarters with the maximum efficiency.
Frederick Sundermann and his recording staff are
here from New York carrying along the work in the
regular way and as a result there has been practically
no interruption in the necessary work of recording
new members and taking care of Gulbransen music
roll orders as they come in.
