W. Frank Harling, the composer of "A Light from
St. Agnes" and "Deep River," is the owner of a
Baldwin piano which he highly appreciates. The

former delightful opera was produced last season by
the Chicago Civic Opera Company. In recitals Mr.
Harling is ably assisted by Garda Maire (Mrs. W.
Frank. Marling), a lyric soprano of rare voice and
skill. The Civic Opera Company, of Oakland, Calif.,
has engaged her to sing the title role in "A Light
from St. Agnes." This is what Mr. Harling says
about the Baldwin piano:
"If a composer's endorsement of your wonderful
pianos means anything to you here's one right from
the heart. In writing my operas, 'A Light from St.
Agnes' and 'Deep River," I sometimes wondered if

H. C. Johnson, proprietor of Johnson's Music Store,
Washington, Ind., last week let the contract for ex-
tensive remodeling planned for the business property

and Fourth streets. Work on the improvements,
which will be from front to back and from the ground
to the roof, will start almost immediately and be
pushed to completion in time for the holiday trade.
A basement will be dug under part of the building
and a modern heating plant installed. An addition
will be constructed in the rear of the present
building.
A beautiful new front will lend attractiveness to
the property, with the display window running back
to a depth of eighteen feet. A narrow lobby along-
side the display window will lead to the entrance.
An entire new floor of oak will be laid in the first
floor and the second floor will be remodeled as addi-
tional display and salesrooms. A freight elevator
for the conveyance of pianos and other heavy instru-
ments will be installed.
Several demonstration booths will be constructed
on the rirst floor with a mezzanine floor just above.
The stairway leading to the mezzanine will turn and
also lead to the second floor.
PROGRESSIVE CLEVELAND
MUSIC FIRM IN NEW STORE
The Muelhauser Bros. Piano Co. Moves to More
Commodious Quarters on Euclid Avenue.
The Muelhauser Bros. Piano Co., Cleveland, Ohio,
is now settled in its new home at East 18th street and
Euclid avenue. The company formerly was at Euclid
avenue and East 22nd street. The new store is very
attractive in every way and is in a good retail busi-
ness district, being but a block from the downtown
theater district.
Prior to moving the company put on a very success-
ful sale which was the first they had held in eleven
years. The new salesrooms have attracted a lot of
people by their beauty and the brothers have received
many compliments. Many beautiful baskets of flowers
were sent by friends in the trade for the opening this
week.
The company's new home has plenty of space for
exhibiting the high grade lines of pianos that are han-
dled. The used piano department is located in the
basement and also demonstrating rooms for rolls.
ACTIVE ILLINOIS DEALER.
Lloyd Parker, music merchant at Harrisburg, 111.,
who was elected treasurer of the Illinois Music Mer-
chants' Association at the recent convention in Chi-
cago, is one of the active piano and radio men of the
state. Mr. Cook is his all-around salesman who cov-
ers the territory thoroughly, and the firm is doing a
fine business in pianos and has the agency for Zenith
radios as well.

die West and on through to the coast demanded a
closer and quicker contact than could be obtained
easily with the main office in New York, and the
opening of a branch in Chicago has been planned
for the greater convenience of dealers operating in
that territory.
E. J. Jordan, in charge, is well and favorably known
to the trade, especially in the area covered by the
activities of this office, which includes the mid-west-
ern and western states to the Pacific coast, and also
the south and southeastern part of the country. Ter-
ritorial questions and assignments, personal atten-
tion to orders, and other interests of American Piano
Company dealers in this wide territory are ably and
successfully handled by the efficient personnel of the
Chicago office.
THE NECESSARY PIANO.
E. W. Fur bush of the Haddorff Piano Company,
while walking through the radio section of the Radio
Show last week, remarked to a friend that radio
business was taking a turn toward piano dealers.
Only a few years ago piano dealers were taking on
radio as an adjunct; now it was the radio dealers
who were seeking for piano connections to help them
to make a better living. As the piano business has
come more and more into its former strides and is
bound to increase that pace, the radio men find they
cannot get along without handling pianos also.

Handsome New Booklet of the B. K. Setter-

Baby Grand Piano Manufacture.
Head of TheCorley Company, Exclusive Cable

writes Cost of Nine Performances.
The B. K. Settergren Co., Bluffton, Ind., manufac-
turers of baby grand pianos exclusively, has issued
a new catalog of its allaring line. It is an artistic
and at the same time a business-like booklet which
gives the most important features concerning the ap-
pearance and construction of the Settergren grand
pianos and it is written in a manner to convince the
prospective piano buyer with their high quality.
There is a preface by B. K. Settergren, president
of the company, whose portrait appears as a frontis-
piece. Mr. Settergren says: "The writer has been
engaged in piano manufacturing for 38 years, but it
is only four years since the B. K. Settergren Co.

Frank Corley of The Corley Company, Richmond,
Va., together with the News Leader of that city, has
just underwritten a full week of grand opera to be
presented in Richmond, January 23 to 28, inclusive.
This will be the first week of grand opera ever
offered in Richmond. The San Carlos Opera Com-
pany, d'rected by Fortune Gallo, was selected for the
occasion. Nine performances will be given, including
three matinees, one for children. A number of cele-
brated guest artists will be presented. The comple-
tion of the new Mosquos Theater in Richmond, with
a seating capacity of over 5,000, is one factor which
has made possible this ambitious civic undertaking
on the part of The Corley Company. It is believed
that this will be by far the most elaborate musical
event ever offered in Virginia.
The Corley Company is a splendid example of a
progressive music store, doing real work to promote
the musical life of its community. Not only will the
city of Richmond benefit from this generosity, but
the entire surrounding territory as well. Neighboring
cities and communities have been invited to partici-
pate in Richmond's first week of opera. Special sec-
tions have been reserved for the various communities.
Such a musical event should bring many people to
Richmond, all of whose attention will be called, in
the most favorable way, to The Corley Company,
through whose initiative this treat was made possible.
With the exception of Humperdinck's opera,
Hansel and Gretel, for the children's performance,
the operas have not yet been chosen. The News
Leader has suggested that an informal contest be
run to determine which operas are most popular with
Richmond's music lovers. The Corley Company, as
joint underwriters with the News Leader, will share
in this excellent publicity. Its name will be kept
before the people of Richmond, not merely as a pro-
gressive, reliable business house, but also as one
interested in advancing the civic and cultural life of
the city.
The Corley Company are exclusive Cable dealers,
carrying the full Cable line of pianos and Inner-
Player pianos. It is one of the most successful music
houses in the South, and this promotion of Rich-
mond's first week of opera is but one example of
their initiative and aggressiveness.

Amazing Success of Thomas P. Radcliff in England
While Using Ampico Recordings.
Ampico listening lessons and music memory con-
tests are popular in England, where Thomas P. Rat-
cliff Is conducting a brilliant series of musical and
educational activities. Mr. Ratcliff is well known and
his success in England, where he has been for some
months, is phenomenal. He has organized commu-
nity singing in many places, notably at Wembly,
where ninety-two thousand people participated. On
this occasion Mr. Ratcliff received the personal con-
gratulations of King George on the success of his
work.
Recently Mr. Ratcliff has been conducting, "under
distinguished patronage," a series of listening lessons
or music memory contests with the Ampico supplying
the music. The popularity of the listening contests
is evidenced by a large attendance of parents and
pupils and the interest in the project displayed by
prominent musicians and gifted amateurs amongst
