AMERICA'S STANDING TIMBER
Fifty Per Cent Is West of the Great Plains, Says
Expert Lumber Man.
Fifty per cent of the standing timber of the United
States is west of the great plains, C. J. Blanchard,
Coast Lumber Trade Extension Bureau, recently told
members of the Toledo Lumbermen's Club in the
Chamber of Commerce. This area, mostly in western
Washington and Oregon, contains 700 billion feet
of lumber, the speaker said, or enough to build 46
million homes.
Mr. Blanchard asserted that the territory had a
larger stand of merchantaable timber than there ever
was in the states of Xew York, Pennsylvania, Wis-
cinsin, Michigan and Minnesota.
He urged that despite the huge amount of timber
available, that conservation be practiced; that the
retail lumber dealer acquaint himself with rightful
uses of materials and give customers the benefit of
positive facts and figures.
