ACTIVE INTERESTS OF
ERNEST Q. CLARK
Civic Interests in City of De Kalb Share At-
tention of Busy Manufacturer in
Roll Making Processes.
A great many people in the trade are familiar with
the part of Ernest G. Clark in making the Clark
Orchestra Roll Company, De Kalb, 111., the wonder-
ful success it is. But not all of them know how
much Mr. Clark's original methods of thought and
mental relaxation of the nurses has been neglected.
Bright and cheerful furnishings adorn the sleeping
rooms, and the parlors and reception rooms are
sumptuously furnished. A splendid library is pro-
vided. A great deal of credit is due to V. W.
O'Brien, Bay City music merchant, who was dele-
gated to choose the musical equipment for the home.
PIANO CONTEST CHAMPION
PLAYS AT CHICAGO THEATERS
Appearance of Winners at Finals for First and Second
Divisions Is Part of Reward.
Chicago's champion amateur pianist, Sol Dorfman,
the winner of the city-wide piano tournament con-
ducted by The Herald and Examiner, and held in
commemoration with the recent music trade conven-
tion at the Stevens Hotel, appeared recently at
the Marks Brothers' Granada Theater.
With him is Rosalyne Tureck, winner of the sec-
ond division in the tournament and one of Dorf-
man's rivals in the finals. Their program included
the classical selections which won their honors, and
others.
Later they appeared at Marks Brothers' new
Marbro Theater, at Madison and Crawford.
Their engagements at these theaters were a part
of their reward as winners in the annual Greater Chi-
cago Children's Piano Playing Tournament, in which
15,000 Chicago children took part.

action contribute to the company's achievements and
incidentally to his own joy in life. His activities in
the factory are pleasantly varied by his work in
furthering public movements making De Kalb such
a pleasant city to live in. With Mrs. Clark he is
active in the success of the Garden Club, a move-
ment contributing to the greater beauty of the city
and which provides continuous supplies of flowers
for hospitals and other public institutions.
Plans for the making of a moving picture of roll
making processes in the plant of the Clark Orchestra
Roll Co. were originated and developed by Mr. Clark.
He set out to give something more than a technical
lilm, although the mechanical processes of perfecting
the Clark Orchestra Roll are highly interesting. In
the production of a Clark roll many considerations
are involved that imparts the character of romance
to the results.
A Clark Orchestra Roll really begins with the mu-
sical germ that gives the impulse to the composer.
The sheet of music that gives the printed evidence
of the composer's work is the first tangible result
with which the Clark Orchestra Roll Company be-
gins the manufacture of a roll. With this beginning
Mr. Clark has evolved a continuation of sequences
that when pictured make a film showing the processes
and materials, the machinery and the craftsmen con-
tributing to the production of the popular Clark Or-
chestra Roll.
The new film showing the making of the Clark
Orchestra Roll is an admirable bit of publicity valu-
able as a convention feature and highly useful for
dea'ers in local advertising through the help of local
moving picture shows.
WELTE=MIGNON REPRODUCING
PIANO FOR NURSES' HOME
Specially Equipped Kranich & Bach, Splendid Instru-
ment Provided for Amusement of Nurses
at Bay City Hospital.
As a mark of affection and respect for his departed
wife, Mendel J. Bialy. prominent citizen of Bay City.
Mich., built and equipped a magnificent nurses' home,
which he presented to the Mercy Hospital of that
city.
As Elizabeth MacDowell Bialy was a lover of
music, particular attention was paid to the selection
of instruments for the building which is her me-
morial. A Kranich & Bach grand piano and a Welte-
Mignon Licensee reproducing piano by the same
makers were installed in the charming music room
which is especially dedicated to the donor's beloved
wife. Among the many records which are provided
are Mrs. Bialy's favorite selections. A large oil
painting of the lady adorns the walls of this room.
The building was opened for the inspection by the
public late in June and those who visited it were
delighted and impressed with its splendid appoint-
ments. Nothing which would add to the comfort and

A "Jumbo" poster devoted to the small grand for
use by dealers m windows and store interiors has
been prepared by the Gulbransen Company, Chicago.
The publicity value of the window is impressed by the
company in the following:
"One thousand people see your window adver-
tising to every ten who enter your store. Business
depends on customers inside. It is only a step from
the window to the counter. By hanging this display
in your window so that it will attract the attention
of passers-by, and bring them in to buy your mer-
chandise, you are only doing the right thing by your-
self. Do you know that a little time spent in hang-
ing this poster in your window will make it pay the
rent? What the public see in magazines and papers is
again brought forcibly to their attention by this
poster in your window. National advertising drives
the public out to buy, this poster directs them to your
store."
