CHENEY PLAYER ACTION
Admirable Product of A. C. Cheney Piano
Action Company, Castleton, N. Y., Aids
Playerpiano's Popularity.
The A. C. Cheney player action, made by the A. C.
Cheney Piano Action Company, Castleton, N. Y., is
a strong talking point for dealers in whose player-
piano presentations the action is installed. Owners
of players with the A. C. Cheney action are of the
satisfied kind who are not irritated by interruptions
in the uses of their instruments and the necessity for
the repair man's services.
With manufacturers,
worry over player details is avoided when they de-
pend on the A. C. Cheney action.
The piano manufacturer with an instrument whose
tone places it in the high-grade class augments its
tonal character on converting it into a player when
he selects the A. C. Cheney player action. He is
assured that everything is all right and the best
musical qualities of his pianos are developed by use
of this player mechanism, which possesses a number
of exclusive features. Its ease of operation, freedom
from trouble, responsiveness to the controls and
artistic musical effects generally, place, the A. C-
Cheney player action in the worthy and dependable
class that constantly tend to make the playerpiano
more popular.
MAKING A PROPER GLUE JOINT
Moisture Content Governs Success of Operation So
That Factor Is Important One.
The tensile strength of a glue joint properly made
in greater than that of the wood. There is, there-
fore, little possibility of fracturing joints properly
glued unless the lumber used has not been properly
dried. For gluing purposes, all stock should be kiln
dried to not to exceed five per cent moisture con-
tents. Some experienced woodworkers advocate kiln
drying to three per cent moisture contents in order
to entirely dissipate the sap contents of the fibre
cells, but the consensus of opinion is that five per
cent is generally most favorable.
Wood shrinks or swells in giving up or taking on
moisture. This action is referred to as "working."
If glued material "works" to a sufficient extent the
action will fracture and sever the glue joints. For
this reason it is essential to properly kiln dry stock
for gluing purposes before using.
Proper methods of kiln drying lumber are receiv-
ing more consideration and attention by progressive
manufacturers at the present time than ever before.
Marked progress in improving kiln construction is
being made and many new features increasing the
efficiency of kiln drying have been brought forward
in recent years.
The Forest Products Laboratory at Madison, Wis.,
is doing splendid experimental and educational work
in this regard for public benefit.
Manufacturers
should recognize the importance of properly' kiln
drying stock for gluing purposes, for upon this basic
condition more than any other factor depends the
success of the work. It is indeed surprising to what
extent inefficiency in this regard exists in many of
the large woodworking establishments.
Correspondent Gets Satisfactory Reply as to Neces-
sary Processes for the Operation.
A correspondent of "Veneers" recently asked that
paper how to straighten out Circassian and mahog-
any veneer so that it can be worked. What he meant
was how to take out the wrinkles so that it may be
laid without checking.
The first thing is to make the veneer pliable, was
the reply of "Veneers." Circassian, crotch and other
fancy veneers are very easily cracked, owing to so
much end wood running to the face. F"or the same
reason they are somewhat more liable to wrinkle
than the straight plain veneers. These veneers are
rendered pliable by moistening with water or steam-
ing, according to the facilities at hand. After it is
made pliable it is put under pressure to straighten it
out, and kept there until the moisture is extracted
and the veneer has resumed sufficient of its former
rigidity to remain straight. This moisture may be
extracted by placing each sheet between two pieces
of soft, absorbing wood, thoroughly dry and heated
as hot as possible in the caul box. These are put in
the press with light pressure and kept there until the
soft wood has absorbed the moisture from the
veneer.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENT WOODS
Specialized Uses Found for Varieties Which Have
the Highly Desirable Character of Resonance.
Apparatus has been used to test and determine tbe
vibratory qualities of wood, and formulas and equa-
tions involving higher mathematics have been worked
out to express values; but no scientific process has
found out much more than has been ascertained by
simple experiments with different woods by prac-
tical makers of musical instruments.
The most highly specialized use of wood, due to
its resonance, is found in the piano sounding board.
The finest spruce goes there, though occasionally
other woods have held the place. Southern white
cedar was once more popular than spruce as sound-
ing boards, but it is not so now.
The piano is not the only musical instrument which
profits by the resonance of wood. The pipe organ
does it, but probably not so much as formerly. Most
pipes are now made of metal. The quality of wood
in a violin has much to do in determining the value
of the instrument. The old master makers of vio-
lins, like Stradivari, Amati and Guarneri, selected
their wood and prepared it with as much care as
they bestowed on the actual shaping and joining.
Maple has always been one of the finest violin woods,
and it is nearly always combined with some soft-
wood like pine or spruce.
Some of the finest working in wood is done in
producing high-class horns for talking machines.
The resonance in the spruce horn of the Starr pho-
nograph is a noted feature. The horn is a sort of
sounding board, corresponding to that of the piano.
There are very fine instruments which are made
without wooden horns, but many persons claim that
the wooden horn gives a softness and richness of
the tone which is extremely rare.
The xylophone is a small musical instrument which
does not rank very high in science or art. Its name
