MAKING A PROPER GLUE JOINT
Moisture Content Governs Success of Operation So
That Factor Is Important One.
The tensile strength of a glue joint properly made
in greater than that of the wood. There is, there-
fore, little possibility of fracturing joints properly
glued unless the lumber used has not been properly
dried. For gluing purposes, all stock should be kiln
dried to not to exceed five per cent moisture con-
tents. Some experienced woodworkers advocate kiln
drying to three per cent moisture contents in order
to entirely dissipate the sap contents of the fibre
cells, but the consensus of opinion is that five per
cent is generally most favorable.
Wood shrinks or swells in giving up or taking on
moisture. This action is referred to as "working."
If glued material "works" to a sufficient extent the
action will fracture and sever the glue joints. For
this reason it is essential to properly kiln dry stock
for gluing purposes before using.
Proper methods of kiln drying lumber are receiv-
ing more consideration and attention by progressive
manufacturers at the present time than ever before.
Marked progress in improving kiln construction is
being made and many new features increasing the
efficiency of kiln drying have been brought forward
in recent years.
The Forest Products Laboratory at Madison, Wis.,
is doing splendid experimental and educational work
in this regard for public benefit.
Manufacturers
should recognize the importance of properly' kiln
drying stock for gluing purposes, for upon this basic
condition more than any other factor depends the
success of the work. It is indeed surprising to what
extent inefficiency in this regard exists in many of
the large woodworking establishments.
Correspondent Gets Satisfactory Reply as to Neces-
sary Processes for the Operation.
A correspondent of "Veneers" recently asked that
paper how to straighten out Circassian and mahog-
any veneer so that it can be worked. What he meant
was how to take out the wrinkles so that it may be
laid without checking.
The first thing is to make the veneer pliable, was
the reply of "Veneers." Circassian, crotch and other
fancy veneers are very easily cracked, owing to so
much end wood running to the face. F"or the same
reason they are somewhat more liable to wrinkle
than the straight plain veneers. These veneers are
rendered pliable by moistening with water or steam-
ing, according to the facilities at hand. After it is
made pliable it is put under pressure to straighten it
out, and kept there until the moisture is extracted
and the veneer has resumed sufficient of its former
rigidity to remain straight. This moisture may be
extracted by placing each sheet between two pieces
of soft, absorbing wood, thoroughly dry and heated
as hot as possible in the caul box. These are put in
the press with light pressure and kept there until the
soft wood has absorbed the moisture from the
veneer.
