SITUATION IN SUPPLIES
Ftcti in Various Lines of Commodities Which Enter
Into Musical Instrument Manufacture.
A course in the gluing of wood was recently given
at the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory, Madison,
Wis.
The Tonk Manufacturing Co.'s branch factory at
4627 East 50th street, Los Angeles, Calif., guaran-
tees prompt deliveries of Tonkbench orders by west-
ern music dealers.
In a talk before the technical division of the Amer-
ican Pulp and Paper Association at the twelfth an-
nual dinner at the Hotel Commodore, New York,
last week, Raphael Zon, director of the Great Lakes
States Forest Experiment Station, said that America's
supply of spruce is being rapidly depleted.
The famous Weickert hammer and damper felts
are carried by Philip W. Oetting & Son, Inc., 213
East 19th street, New York, which house also carries
a full line of grand and upright hammers made of
Weickert felt as well as full supplies of fine bushing
cloths and other requirements of that kind.
Hard rains and resultant floods have interrupted
the shipment of logs for veneer mills in Evansville,
Tnd., and other points.
Much of the hardwood used in the piano industry
is of Georgia origin, according ot a report by State
Forester B. H. Lufburrow, who recently reported on
the productiveness of twenty-three countries having
a total of 4,742,450 acres of hardwood.
Mahogany has been exported from British Hon-
duras for more than 200 years and since the decline
in the value of logwood has been the chief product.
The piano industry is represented in the Wood
Industries Division of the American Society of Me-
chanical Engineers by Theo. Cassebeer, Paul Victor
and Paul Bilhuber, all of Steinway & Sons, New
York; H. C Rice, C. Kurtzmann & Co., Buffalo; A.
K. Gutsohn, Standard Pneumatic Action Co., New
York, and Paul Taylor.

tion in New Haven, Conn., recently.
The Bureau of P'oreign and Domestic Commerce
has been asked by a firm in Sydney, Australia, for
information leading to the purchase of American
veneers. The bureau inquiry is numbered 24,270.
B. J. Palmer's interest in the Palmer Piano House,
Medford, Ore., has been sold to Clayton H. Isaac,
William H. Fluhrer and Miss Ruth Fluhrer.
FAIRBANKS PLATES.
In the American piano industry the piano plates
made by the Fairbanks Company, Springfield, Ohio,
are considered a potent means towards attaining the
character of sturdiness and durability for pianos. It
is a selection prompted by distinctive qualities in the
Fairbanks plates which manufacturers believe to be
essential to the production of high-class pianos. Fair-
banks piano plates are particularly desirable because
they conform to the requirements of the exacting
piano manufacturer and are made from the finest
materials by the most skillful- workmen. It is ad-
mitted by dealers, piano makers and piano owners of
a discriminating kind that a Fairbanks plate in a
piano is a prime factor in dependable construction.
SAFETY FOR MOVERS.
The competent piano mover who works with a
dependable hoist like those made and sold by the
Self-Lifting Piano Truck Co., Findlay, Ohio, real-
izes the danger he avoids by its use. The devices
are of the kind which have the element of safety to
recommend them, an argument that appeals to the
humane and careful dealer unwilling to take chances
with less dependable hoisting devices.
REVERSES TARIFF RULING.
The United States Customs Court has sustained the
protest of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
against the action of the college of customs at Cleve-
land, Ohio, in assessing tariff duties on music
imported from abroad. The orchestra company
claimed free entry for the music as imported "solely
for the encouragement of the fine arts."
FINE HARDWOOD LUMBER.
Buyers of lumber for piano manufacturers and
other musical instrument makers are interested in the
special hardwood lumber manufactured by the Cross-
man Lumber Company, with headquarters in Grand
Rapids. It is one of the large hardwood specialists
and is prepared to meet the requirements of any users
of fine lumber, in any quantities.
VENEER MILL COMPLETED.
Jasper Veneer & Manufacturing Company, Jasper,
Texas, announces the completion of its plant, which
is now completely equipped for the manufacture of
air and kiln dried quality wirebound stock and dimen-
sion veneer. "A trial order will convince you" is the
assurance in the announcement.
