Springfield a Plate Center
Certain centers, too, developed the perfection of the
piano plate and notable in the list is Springfield,
Ohio. That busy city has earned fame in the piano
world by reason of its three piano plate producers,
the Fairbanks Co., the O. S. Kelly Co. and the Wick-
ham Piano Plate Co. The piano man everywhere is
familiar with Springfield's distinction as the foremost
producer of that great essential in piano construction.
In the pianos he sells he knows that one or more of
the names mentioned are associated with their pro-
duction.
Schaff Piano Bass Strings.
One of the most widely known makers of impor-
tant supplies for piano manufacturers is the Schaff
Piano String Co., 2009-2021 Clybourn avenue, Chi-
cago. It is among the old and honorable concerns,
which by persistence in an admirable policy, has
achieved fame for its products, success for itself and
has added to the glory of the American piano supply
industry.
The Schaff Piano String Co. is famed for its line
of steel wound bass strings. Wherever the piano man-
ufacturer seeks the best, the Schaff strings are chosen
above all others. They are preferred because of their
mechanical perfection in the making and undoubted
aid towards sonorousness and power in the pianos.
Schaff bass strings, being considered essentials to fine
musical tone and durability, have been associated
with the most noteworthy American pianos from the
founding' of the Schaff Piano String Co., and still
continue as requisites in the making of the country's
leading pianos.
A. C. Cheney Player Action.
In time when the playerpiano advanced in develop-
ment it was in the order of things that the specialty
player action supply house should appear. Such a
specialty house is the A. C. Cheney Piano Action
Company, which makes a player action of the meri-
torious kind that has achieved success from its intro-
duction. The continuous use of the A. C. Cheney
player action by prominent manufacturers is the most
convincing testimonial of its worthiness.
The A. C. Cheney player action is considered a per-
fect piece of mechanism which saves manufacturers
using it all worry over the behaviour of the completed

Air Cushion Shipping Container Corp. Begins Series
of Test Suits Against Radio Concerns.
Radio manufacturers arc concerned in the outcome
of the suit brought in the United States District
Court for the Southern District against Davega, Inc..
by the Air Cushion Shipping Container Corporation
of New York City. It is alleged in the complaint that
Davega, Inc., sold and shipped a radio set enclosed in
a shipping case which infringed the patents held by
the Air Cushion Corporation. A great number of
manufacturers, dealers and jobbers are now infringing
these patents, an official of the corporation said.
"Scores of manufacturers, dealers and jobbers," he
said, "have been infringing the corporation's patents
on shipping cases for a long time, and it has been
decided to bring suits against all of these so that the
rights of the corporation may be protected. These
patents cover the 'Air Cushion' shipping containers,
which are commonly used in the radio industry, and
any manufacturer, dealer or jobber who sells radio
sets packed in boxes made in accordance with these
patents, and who has not been licensed, is liable to
suit for infringement.''
DISCRIMINATIONS IN FREIGHT RATES.
Undue preferences and prejudices in freight rates
in the southwest are summarized as a basis for re-
vision in a report to the Interstate Commerce Com-
mission. The report says that manufacturers and job-
bers at Fort Worth are severely restricted by com-
petition from St. Louis, Memphis. Shreveport, New
Orleans, Houston, Fort Smith, Kansas City, and
Wichita. The record discloses mutual competition
under inequitable rate conditions between points in
Oklahoma, Arkansas, western Louisiana, Texas, Kan-
sas and southern Missouri.
playerpianos in the hands of the dealer's customers.
In launching the A. C. Cheney player action the
makers realized the extent of its responsibilities. Its
aim was the production of a player action distin-
guished by simplicity of construction, sureness of
touch and assurances of the artistic tonal effects. The
production of the A. C. Cheney player action contin-
ues to increase as the player manufacturers find that
the best musical qualities of their pianos are devel-
oped by the use of this action.

FAIRBANKS PLATES.
In the American piano industry the piano plates
made by the Fairbanks Company, Springfield, Ohio,
are considered a potent means towards attaining the
character of sturdiness and durability for pianos. It
is a selection prompted by distinctive qualities in the
Fairbanks plates which manufacturers believe to be
essential to the production of high-class pianos. Fair-
banks piano plates are particularly desirable because
they conform to the requirements of the exacting
piano manufacturer and are made from the finest
materials by the most skillful- workmen. It is ad-
mitted by dealers, piano makers and piano owners of
a discriminating kind that a Fairbanks plate in a
piano is a prime factor in dependable construction.
SAFETY FOR MOVERS.
The competent piano mover who works with a
dependable hoist like those made and sold by the
Self-Lifting Piano Truck Co., Findlay, Ohio, real-
izes the danger he avoids by its use. The devices
are of the kind which have the element of safety to
recommend them, an argument that appeals to the
humane and careful dealer unwilling to take chances
with less dependable hoisting devices.
REVERSES TARIFF RULING.
The United States Customs Court has sustained the
protest of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
against the action of the college of customs at Cleve-
land, Ohio, in assessing tariff duties on music
imported from abroad. The orchestra company
claimed free entry for the music as imported "solely
for the encouragement of the fine arts."
FINE HARDWOOD LUMBER.

other musical instrument makers are interested in the
