PERKINS GLUE DECISION
Circuit Court of Appeals for Sixth Circuit Re-
verses All Previous Decisions and Finds
for Perkins Glue Co.
The Perkins Glue Company, patentees of Perkins
Vegetable Glue, South Bend, Ind., under date of April
12, makes an announcement to all users and pros-
pective users of vegetable glue, believing they will
be interested in an important development in connec-
tion with the Perkins Glue Co.'s patent rights on
vegetable glue:
"After our patent for vegetable glue had been sus-
tained as valid and infringed by several of the
United States Courts in various suits which we
brought, the Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second
Circuit (sitting in New York), rendered a decision
holding the patent not infringed in that case," says
the announcement. "Shortly thereafter the Circuit
Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit (sitting in Chi-
cago) handed down a similar decision holding that
the Kane glue (glue made with the Kane vegetable
material) did not infringe.
"The Circuit Court of Appeals for the Sixth Cir-
cuit (sitting in Cincinnati) has, however, now handed
down a decision holding that such Kane vegetable
glue (glue made from the Kane material) is an in-
fringement of our patent. We enclose complete copy
of the opinion handed down by the Sixth Circuit
Court of Appeals which we believe you will be in-
terested in reading.
"The decision, you will see, gives the patent a broad
construction, and the reasoning of the Court is such
that under the decision the infringing glue need not
necessarily be made from the Kane glue material,
but may equally well be made from other brands of
so called "raw" cassava and still fall within the pat-
ent and be an infringement.
"We are confident that this decision of the Sixth
Circuit Court of Appeals, holding that such glues
are infringements of our patent rights, will be fol-
lowed eventually in all suits hereafter to be tried."
The suit before the U. S. Court of Appeals (Sixth
Circuit) sitting in Cincinnati was heard before Cir-
cuit Judges Denison, Mack and Moorman, and deci-
sion was handed down March 18. In the decision
which reversed the findings of the second and seventh
circuits, the closing paragraphs read:
"With the greatest deference to the opinions of the
Circuit Court of Appeals of the Second and Seventh
Circuits, we find ourselves unable to concur with
them. Even if we could agree that their interpreta-
tion of the intent of the court in the original Solva
opinion was right we would still think that we ought
not to reach the same result as they do, because in
that event we would feel constrained not to follow
the Solva decision.
"The decree below is reversed, and the cause re-
manded for further proceedings in accordance with
this opinion."

PIANO ACTIONS
FACTORIES:
Arthur Chapman Cheney, of the fine old piano
action industry which bears his name at Castleton,
N. Y., has been elected president of the National Ex-
change bank of that city to succeed the late Harvey
H. G. Ingalls. Prior to his election Mr. Cheney was
vice president. Mr. Cheney had been a director in the
bank and his activities in the business of the city had
long given prominence to his abilities and forceful-
ness.
Mr. Cheney besides is president of the Castleton
Public library, secretary and treasurer of the A. C-
Cheney Piano Action Company, owner of Chenwold
Farm, famous for its registered Guernsey cattle, and
vice president of the Castleton Building and Loan
Association.
The A. C. Cheney Piano Action Co. is one of the
substantial and prosperous industries associated with
the piano business as all manufacturers in this line
of instruments know.
The reasonable prices charged for rebuilding and
repairing pianos and phonographs by the Piano Re-
pair Shop, 339 South Wabash avenue, Chicago, is an
additional inducement to the character of the place
for expert work. A busy shop is a recognition of the
company's admirable methods. Player actions are in-
stalled, actions and keys repaired and instruments re-
finished and remodeled and every job is guaranteed.

Extension of Scheme of National Forests Is Plan of
Forest Reservation Commission.
The Government cannot restore the wealth of tim-
ber which earlier generations used up so wastefully,
but it can assure a continuous supply for future gen-
erations. The forest reservation commission and the
forest service propose to spend approximately $25,-
000,000 of the $40,000,000 sought in the purchase of
woodlands to complete the chain of national forests
in the White mountains in New England and through
the southern Appalachian range.
Another southern project would be the acquisition
of approximately 2,500,000 acres in the southern
coastal plain to be restocked with the long and short
leaf pine timber native to that district.
The lake states program proposes the purchase of
about 100,000 acres of cut over and burnt over lands
in northern Wisconsin and extensive additions to the
Michigan and Minnesota national forest.
COST OF RUNNING RADIO SET
Interesting Estimate Gives Expense at Seven and a

Worry Over Player Details
is avoided by the manufac-
turer who uses the

everything is all right and
that the best musical quali-
ties of his pianos are develop-
ed by the use of this player
mechanism.
A. C. CHENEY
PIANO ACTION COMPANY
CASTLETON, N. Y.
It costs the owner a little over 7 l A cents an hour
to operate his radio receiver. That is, if you are an
average radio fan and own an average set. For
this figure is the estimate of the average cost of
operating a radio set today. It includes everything—
from price of receiving set down to actual outlay for
operation of charger and B battery eliminator from
the house-lighting current. Liberal allowances have
been made for deterioration of parts as well as cost
of the current used.
Here is how this figure was obtained: The "aver-
age receiver" costs about $80. That's shown by
actual figures of sales recorded by the Radio Manu-
facturers and Dealers' Association. It is a five-tube
set, is run by an A battery of the storage variety and
by two heavy B batteries, or by a B eliminator.
This "average receiver" lasts about four years,
figuring its life conservatively. The A battery, its
charger and the B eliminator may be considered

also as lasting this time, although the latter two can
well outlast many receivers.
On this basis, however, we can estimate the fol-
lowing annual cost of these parts: Receiver, $20; A
battery, $4; charger, $3; B eliminator, $12; total, $39.
WOOD SPECIALISTS
Eighty-four-Year-Old Industry at Lisbon, N. H.,
Makes Wood Piano Parts.
At its plant at Lisbon, New Hampshire, the Parker-
Young Company manufactures sounding boards,
backs, bridges, key-beds, bar stock, bottom boards
and box shooks, for the piano trade. The company
publishes a paper called "The Pycolog," which tells
something about the fine old industry, established
in 1843.
It is easy to agree that there is considerable justi-
fication for the claim that the Lisbon industry is a
"specialist" when it is considered that some of
the foremen there have been supervising the manufac-
ture of backs, boards, bridges, etc., for a lifetime. The
offices of the Parker-Young Company are at 131
State street, Boston, Mass.
HAMMACHER, SCHLEMMER & CO. BOOK.
Hammacher, Schlemmer & Co., New York, has
issued a valuable booklet, "Handy Hints for Handy
Men," which is all the more desirable because it is
seasonable. The hints are for making window, door
and porch screens, commodities in which everybody
will be particularly interested in a few weeks. The
directions are clear and are the more easily followed
because of the accompanying figures. The making of
the step joint, miter and cross corner joint, doweled
miter joint, square end doweled joint, butt joint with
angle iron are all described and also the method of
applying the wire. Advices and suggestions about
the choice of wire complete the valuable little book.
SCHOOL MUSICIANS COMPETE.
Chicago high schood musicians who aspire to com-
pete in the state-wide contests for instrumental solo-
ists, to be held at Urbana, 111., April 29 and 30, had
•their elimination contests April 23 at the Central
Theater, in the Chicago Musical College building.
Players on the flute, piccolo, clarinet, oboe, saxo-
phone, bassoon, cornet, French horn, trombone, bari-
tone and tuba were entered.
