BEST CANE FOR REEDS.
Every saxophone and clarinet player is interested
in getting the best reed obtainable and, of course,
the manufacturers are always anxious to supply the
music dealers with the best. Why one reed may
prove unsatisfactory after a short period of use and
another continue serviceable for a long time may be
accounted for as much in the source of sapply of
t'.ie cane as in the processes of manufacture.
The cane used for reeds takes three years to grow,
and after it is cut it is given another two years to
thoroughly dry. which makes a five-year process.
The best cane comes from the Var, near the Medi-
terranean, in the south of France. Cane grown in
rch ground with a subsoil kept damp by filtration of
the sea, is the best for reeds.
MARKING PATENTED ARTICLES. '
A bill introduced in the Senate by Senator Metcalf
of Rhode Island, would amend existing patent laws
by requiring that every patented article shall have
a statement to that effect stamped or otherwise placed
thereon. The bill provides that in any suit for in-
fringement by the party failing so to mark, no dam-
ages shall be recovered by the plaintiff, except on
proof that the defendant was duly notified of the
infringement and warned against its continuance.
