The small American dealer really unaware of the
true conditions in his trade, is often flattered at the
receipt of the European appeal, and thinks he is se-
curing a big advantage by "buying direct." He sends
the cash and waits months for the goods an American
jobber could ship him in twenty-four hours. And

organization can have a band or orchestra," is the
arresting phrase which heads the display advertise-
ment of C. G. Conn, Ltd., Elkhart, Ind., in the cur-
rent issue of the Saturday Evening Post. The adver-
tisement is rendered more attractive by the cut of the
famous concert band of the University of Illinois,
Albert Austin Harding, director, the foremost of all
American college bands. Members earn scholarships
by their playing ability. Conn instruments are used.
How C. G. Conn, Ltd., provides an easy way to the
ambitious boy or girl to procure an instrument by
"Conn's liberal new rental plan'' makes interesting
reading. "Conn provides a complete set of instru-
ments, requiring only small monthly rental payments
which are credited in full toward the purchase of
these instruments if you decide to buy," says the adv.
"Our amazingly liberal purchase plan enables organ-
izations to easily obtain a complete set of genuine
Conn instruments such as used by Sousa, Conway,
Creatore, Kryl and the other leaders in concert,
bands, symphony, opera and popular orchestras."
Then follows an announcement of a book, "An Easier
Way to Earn a College Education," in which are told
the actual experiences of many who have played their
way to success with Conn instruments.
INCREASED RADIO FREIGHT RATES.
Freight rates on radio sets and combination radio
and talking machine instruments have been increased
by a recent ruling of the Interstate Commerce Com-
mission. The increase amounts to 50 per cent on
less than carload lots and 20 per cent on full carload
lots. The rates on less than carload lots have been
raised from first class to one and one-half times first
class. But it still will be possible to ship radio and
talking machine combinations with a minimum weight
of 16,000 pounds per carload as second class under
the commission's ruling.
