NEW COLUMBIA POLICY
Methods to Protect Dealers in Columbian Rec-
ords Announced This Week in Letter
from General Manager Fuhri.
From the offices of W. C. Fuhri, vice-president and
general sales manager of the Columbia Phonograph
Company, Inc., 1819 Broadway, New York City,
there has been issued to Columbia dealers a new
statement of future Columbia record policy.
This statement of policy is intended to protect the
Columbia dealer and restore to him his peace of
mind on the two main points on which the trade is
constantly in doubt—list price reductions and over-
stocking. The quality of recent Columbia releases
have been very well commented upon by the trade
and the general public and it is planned to continue
this quality and improve it wherever possible.
Mr. Fuhri said that efforts to correct conditions
arising from fear of price reductions and overstock-
ing, the company adds general trade discounts and
substantial assistance in advertising Columbia prod-
ucts.
"Our entire record manufacture has been renewed
and improved to the end that we are now confident
we are producing records superior in quality to any
record manufactured today," said Mr. Fuhri. "The
public has recognized the wonderful improvement in
both recording and manufacturing methods employed
by Columbia, and our dealers have been generous in
their expressions of appreciation of our new quality
record product. Everyone who hears the new proc-
ess Columbia records is immediately struck with
the quality of tone, volume, and clarity and the
wonderful smooth surface."
From now on, all records will be of this new qual-
ity and will be identified by new labels. Columbia
dealers may return Columbia records every three
months to an amount equal to ten per cent of the
dealers' net purchases of Columbia records of the
three months' period.

trade and shipped on standing orders on Tuesday,

WORLD'S BIGGEST BANJO.
The largest known banjo has just been completed
in San Jose, Cal., with a head taken from a 32-inch
bass drum. The length over all of the instrument,
built by Roy Kearn, is ten feet. The next largest
banjo known here is seven feet, three inches in
length. The pegs on the neck are eight inches long,
and an inch in diameter at their smallest point.
Piano wires are used for strings. To play it the
whole hand must be used instead of one finger, as
on the ordinary banjo.
PHONOGRAPH COMPANY BUSY.
The Vincennes Phonograph Company, Vincennes,
Ind., has become one of the city's most important
industries. Business now on hand totals more than
$200,000 and orders pending and submitted for ac-
ceptance reach an additional $800,000, or more than
a million dollars altogether. The company has an
extensive payroll distributed to a large force of
workers.

CONNS AT BIG MEETINGS
Fine Instruments Made by C. G. Conn, Elk-
hart, Ind., Numerous in Annual Gather-
ings of Fraternal Orders.
Several big assemblages of fraternal orders this
year show the wonderful growth in the movement
towards lodge bands. These were the most interest-
ing features of the big gatherings and they were
always closely associated with the joyousness. A
good share of the work of the festivities depended
upon the bands and it was a notable fact in several
places that Conn instruments were in a big majority.
Conn instruments were numerous in the miisic
making at the big Shrine gatherings in.-Los Angeles
in June. During the three days of the program the
George J. Birkel Co., representatives of C. G. Conn.
Ltd., in that city, was the headquarters for the great
army of bandsmen who are proud of their Conn
instruments.
Also in June the Veiled Prophets of the Grotto
meeting in Atlantic City, made that place an enjoy-
able demonstration of band music. It had a big rep-
resentation of Conn enthusiasts, as had the Elks a
big time from July 13 to 18 in Portland, Ore.
Conn instruments were numerous in the Com-
mandery bands from all parts of the country which
attended the Triennial Conclave of Knights Templar
in Seattle late in July.
U. S. MUSIC CO.'S ELECTION.
At the recent meeting of the United States Music
Co., held in the company's offices, 2934-38 West Lake
street, Chicago, the following officers were re-elected
for the ensuing year: Arthur A. Friestedt, president;
George L. Ames, vice-president; D. A. Clithero, sec-
retary, and John G. Crotsleey, treasurer. A very
cheering annual report showed how an increase of
business of about 30 per cent was maintained over
last vear.
