A new organization is the Royal Purple Orchestra
of eleven pieces fully equipped with Conn instru
ments, purchased from the McDougall-Conn Co., is
prominent in the events. W. A. McDougall is the
organizer and manager of the orchestra, and he has
selected a talented group of musicians.

COST OF SPRUCE LUMBER.
A preliminary statement of information secured
by the Tariff Commission in its investigation of the
cost of production of spruce, fir and other logs in
the Northwest shows a slight difference between
domestic and Canadian cost. In 1923 174,000,000 feet
of logs were imported from Canada, and, based on
statistics it gathered, the commission estimates do-
mestic production at 8,326,000,000 feet, indicating that
about 95 per cent of the logs going into production of
Puget Sound came from domestic logging operations.
MAHOGANY IMPORTS FOR MAY.
Imports of mahogany logs into the United States
in May were 4,905 M feet, of which 1,635 M feet
were from Africa, 1,697 M feet from Central America,
1,195 M feet from Mexico, and 144 M feet from the
Philippines. Incoming shipments of cedar logs ag-
gregated 1,235 M feet. Imports of sawn mahogany
from the Philippines amounted to 3,171 M feet and of
other sawn cabinet woods, 642 M feet.
