GREAT BAND MASTER'S SPEECH
John P. Sousa's Talk at Dutch Treat Club Started
with "Stars and Stripes."
John Philip Sousa, foremost band master, has been
introduced as principal speaker in dinners all over
the world, but he perhaps never had such an intro- 1
duction as that which presented him to a distin-
guished audience of publishers, editors, authors, ar-
tists and newspaper men at a luncheon of the Dutch
Treat Club in New York, Tuesday, May 12th.
President George Barry Mallon, addressing the
three hundred members and their guests present,
said, "I am pleased to introduce to you the next
speaker," and with that he pressed a button and
the Duo-Art piano began to play "The Stars and
Stripes Forever."
Mr. Sousa described some of his world experi-
ences which are to be included in the story of his
very eventful life, soon to be published by G. P.
Putnam Sons.
CIRCASSIAN WALNUT SCARCE.
According to piano manufacturers and superin-
tendents, little genuine Circassian walnut has been
obtainable in this country since the war. This wood
is obtained from the Russian Caucasus section, from
which it is floated to the Black Sea for shipment.
During the world war supplies were naturally cut
off and many substitutes came into vogue in place
of this handsome veneer.

FROM THE BIGGEST
ORCHESTRION
THE WALNUT SITUATION.
The buying of American walnut during the greater
part of the past year was extremely heavy in com-
parison with the same period one year ago. Produc-
tion at the various mills remains in a peculiar posi-
tion. Most of them are oversold on the grades of
F. A. S. and Selects; at the same time, stocks No. 1
Common and No. 2 Common remain in a somewhat
unbalanced position.
RELIEF OF FOREST TAXATION.
A phase of the reforestation program, before the
Wisconsin legislature in Madison, provides tax relief
on forest lands. The proposed State constitutional
amendment provides for such a resolution by the
Senate Judiciary Committee. The resolution would
amend the taxing clause of the State constitution to
promote improvements, including forests.

structure.
