shack the world's largest factory of its kind—with
these as standards, C. G. Conn, Ltd., starts on its
second half century of development secure in the
public faith.
(Continued from page 6.)
F. E. Hendricks, proprietor of the Hendricks Music
Shop, of Santa Barbara, has opened a branch music
store at 421 Oak street, Ventura, Cal. The new
branch will temporarily share half of the Marks &
Kasmar store, handling a full line of Hallet & Davis
pianos.
is responsible for many revolutionary changes in
methods of manufacture. The famous hydraulic ex-
pansion process is perhaps the most important of
these, as well as the best known. These changes
were brought about primarily to produce better in-
struments, and not to reduce costs especially, though
that was accomplished also where it was possible to
do so without detracting from quality. In a few
instances, both better instruments and reduced costs
were made possible by the same improvement—for
example the new way of making violins.
It is therefore evident that progressiveness has
been the chief factor in the growth of C. G. Conn,
Ltd. Probably next in importance should come the
willingness to learn. Although Conn maintains a
staff of experts which is probably the largest and
most competent of its kind in the world, it is always
ready and glad to listen to suggestions from any-
one. Suggestions from scores of professional musi-
cians have been incorporated in the various models
of instruments manufactured, and in several cases this
willingness to learn made it possible to secure exclu-
sive rights to valuable patents granted to persons not
connected with the Conn organization.
Honest and Square.
From the point of view of the public, the spirit of
fairness about the Conn organization is another im-
portant factor in the growth of the institution.
Honesty and square dealing are principles which
are, one might say, inherent in the Conn system.
The public knows that when C. G. Conn, Ltd., makes
a statement, that statement is true. There is no
"sales talk" about the Conn organization. What is
printed in advertising or written in letters or told by
authorized dealers, is absolutely reliable to the full
extent of human knowledge.
We read about "corporations without heart or
souls," but C. G. Conn, Ltd., is not that kind of a
corporation. If ever a business was conducted with
a heart, it is this business. Although Conn has a
virtual monopoly on modern instruments, due to
patent rights which have cost hundreds of thousands
of dollars, the instruments are sold on a fair profit
basis. Instruments with many exclusive features,
some of which cost the company an actual royalty,
often sell for the same price that is asked for other
instruments without these features.
Another factor in the price for which Conn instru-
ments can be sold is efficiency in production. More
than eighty per cent of the employes of the company
own stock in it; they receive dividends from the
earnings, and there is also a profit-sharing system
which dates back to 1890—perhaps the oldest profit-
sharing system in America. It pays the workers to
do their best, without wasting time, for the greater
profit for the year the greater is their share. They
are partners in this corporation that does have a
heart and soul.
In Years to Come.
Such is the story of fifty years. Progressive,
willing to learn, honest and with a "heart"—C. G.
Conn, Ltd., has won its way to the pinnacle of suc-
cess in its chosen line. Today it is the largest band
instrument factory on the globe, it employs the
most people and it produces the most instruments.
And what of the future? So long as human emo-
tions shall endure, so long shall music have its place
in the world, and the name of Conn has now been
made virtually a part of music. With the progres-
siveness, willingness to learn, and honesty which have
demonstrated their potency in bringing out of a tiny
