Radio will soon be known as the weather man's
most valuable ally. The governments of several
countries having Alpine territory within their borders
are preparing to equip several weather observation
stations in the Alps with radio.
COLLEGIANS PLAY HANDCRAFT
PARADING IN ZERO WEATHER.
That Martin Handcraft instruments are proof
against changes in temperature was well illustrated
recently when the Oklahoma Collegians paraded
through the snow on Mount Royal, Montreal, Can-
ada, in the 1925 Winter Carnival, with the thermom-
eter registering below zero.
The band, which is completely equipped with Mar-
tin Handcraft instruments played, for the siow frolic
for several hours without any ill effect on the tone of
the instruments—the same instruments incidentally
that had served them in a parade in San Antonio,
Texas, last summer, when the mercury was over the
100 mark. The Oklahoma Collegians are Victor Re-
cording- artists for Canada and are under the direc-
tion of George Freeman. The orchestra is composed
of the following capable players:
George Bersch, piano; Thomas Clines, violin; Carl
Smelser, trombone; Clint Johnson, banjo; George S.
Freeman, trumpet; Edward Schaaf, drums; Herschel
Nix, alto sax, clarinet, oboe; John Meede, tuba; W.
E. Van Vacter, tenor sax, clarinet and trumpet.

FEATURES Q R S IN MILWAUKEE
PURPOSE OF LOUD SPEAKER
Horn in Relation to Reproduction of Sound Ex-
plained by Radio Expert.
The purpose of the loud speaker is to reproduce
and not produce, according to Edward H. Jewett,
New York radio expert. Speaking at a radio con-
ference recently, Mr. Jewett said:
"It is the loud speaker's job to reproduce the music
or speech put into the receiving set, and nothing else,
particularly nothing of its own origin. The very limi-
tations of the loud speaker's job are its prime diffi-
culties.
"True tone quality and faithful reproduction are
attributes not easily gained. To give ample volume
to the low bass notes whose audible frequencies hover
around fifty cycles and to do as well with the higher
treble notes around 5,000 cycles is an expert scien-
tist's task.
"We all know of the care to preserve the original
quality of the music or speech as it travels through
the microphone, the transmitter, and the receiving set.
This same painstaking attention, the same scientific
care must be showered upon its passage through the
loud speaker. The finest artist, the best equipped

with them.
