NEW FRENCH AUTOMATIC ORGAN
Small Instrument Recently Patented Is Intended for
Use in Teaching Children to Sing.
A small automatic harmonium has recently been
patented in France by A. L. C. H. Flachacre, which
is intended to train the ear of children, teach them
school songs, and enable them to execute solfeggio
exercises. Hitherto a music-master was necessary
who could play a school song to perfection on a har-
monium, piano or violin. Then, if he sang, he had
to have a very sensitive ear and an excellent voice.
The object of this invention is to make it possible, in
the absence of such a master, to teach singing to
children.
To make the instrument play it suffices to place the
roll of parchment paper containing the song or exer-
cise in the harmonium and turn a handle. There is
no keyboard. It can, just like a master, give the note
as long as required, execute the entire piece, play one
or several notes, part of a phrase, or an entire phrase,
etc., and repeat them as required. If the pupils sing
out of tune the perforated paper can be stopped and
the badly-sung part sounded as long as required.
Sam W. Bowlby, 1623 Second avenue, Rock Island,
111., recently visited Chicago, where he attended a
conference of Brunswick dealers and a school for
salesmen held at the Hotel Sherman.
"BOB" BPFROS,
Martin Handcraft Enthusiast.
One only needs to glance at the good-natured,
genial expression on "Bob" Effros' face to get a clear
conception of the kind of fellow he is. He is the
type that you would instinctively call "Bob" in spite
of the fact that he is regarded as one of the outstand-
trumpet players of the entire world.
As most everyone knows, Bob Effros is a member
of Vincent Lopez' Hotel Pennsylvania Orchestra.
For some time he has used a Martin Handcraft in-
strument, and, as will be seen from the inscription on
his photograph, he does not hesitate to tell the world
that the Martin is the best instrument made.
Wilfred Hutchinson, conceded to be one of the
finest cornet soloists in England, is another eminent
British musician who has recently adopted a Martin
Handcraft instrument. The Martin Symphony Cor-
net in artists' special finish, which he is now using,
was sold to him by LaFleur & Son, Ltd., Martin
dealers in London, Eng.
