C. G. Conn, Ltd., Elkhart, Ind., Completes Bass
Horn to Be Displayed at Centennial.
The largest practical bass horn in the world, a BB
sousaphone, handsomely engraved in inlaid platinum
on a burnished gold finish, is now being completed
at the factory of C. G. Conn, Ltd., Elkhart, Ind., to
be displayed this week at Elkhart during the Cen-
tennial celebration with other Conn instruments in
the window of the Boyer Music Store.
The horn is a $3,000 instrument. Its bell is 9 l / 2
feet in circumference.
The engravings on the horn depict the history of
the Ccnn factory from its founding in 1874 until the
present. First work on the mammoth instrument
was started six months ago, and for more than four
weeks expert engravers have been working on the
horn.

New List of Columbia Music Roll Co. Has Oldtime
Attractiveness for Buyers.
The October list of Columbia Word Rolls issued
by the Columbia Music Roll Company, 721 North
Kedzie avenue, Chicago, is filled with incentives to
the buying desire in the playerpiano owner. Some
new names will be noticed among the recording
artists and it is considered they maintain the pepful
character of the Columbia music rolls. The name

A sheet miisx salesman in a Broadway store was
taken to a hospital the other day with nervous ex-
hausticn. He said his nerves had been frazzled by
customers coming to him to buy songs, and then
asking him: "Would you mind humming this tune
for me, please?", said O. O. Mclntyre in a recent
syndicated letter. And he added: "There is one
music store in the Times Square district, however,
that has eight piano players, ready at all times to
play tunes that are wanted. They are paid $50 a
week.
RADIO FOR FIRE DEPARTMENT.
In order to partially replace a telegraphic network
of cables and to give a more efficient and improved
service to the public, the fire department of the city
of Vienna, Austria, hopes to make rather extensive
uses of the radio, according to a report to the De-
partment of Commerce in Washington. P"or the last
six months, experiments have been conducted; the
telegraphic station at the fire department headquar-
ters equipped with sending and receiving stations,
while six fire fighting vehicles are being equipped
with radio receiving sets with different wave lengths.
Edwin A. Elmer, who for some time has been con-
nected with the John Church Company as Danville,
111., manager, has been promoted to branch store
manager at Peoria, 111.

Celebrated May Bell Range of Banjos, Banjo
Mandolins, Tenor Banjos and Banjo Uku-
leles at Illinois Products Exposition.
The Slingerland Banjo Co., Chicago, has a note-
worthy display of banjos at the Illinois Products Ex-
position, which opened Thursday of this week at the
new American Exposition Palace; 666 Lake Shore
drive, Chicago, to continue to October 18. The dis-
play of the Slingerland Banjo Co., attracts at-
tention both from its extent and meritorious charac-
ter, and the wider interest in banjos with the public
today.
At all hours of the clay and evening an interested
group may be encountered about the extensive show-
ing of the widely celebrated May Bell line of banjos.
The variety in the sizes and forms of the instruments
amaze the onlookers unacquainted with the propor-
tions of the big factory at 1815 Orchard street and
its ability to produce great quantities of banjos of
all forms.
But it is the banjo players and the musical people
aware of the important part of the banjo in the mod-
ern dance orchestra who linger longest in front of
the display and view most interestedly the fine range
of presentations of the Slingerland Banjo Co. There
are over forty styles of banjos, banjo mandolins, tenor
banjos and banjo ukuleles in the display which ad-
mirably shows visitors the excellence of the products
of one Illinois manufacturer.

The recent "Truth in Advertising" campaign
launched by American advertising delegates during
the summer convention in London is reported to have
revolutionized radio advertising in Great Britain.
The latest publicity makes particular point not to
exaggerate capabilities of products and carefully
qualifies all statements.
NEW SONGS ADOPTED.
The" City Club of Memphis, Tenn., has chosen
"Memphis, Down in Dixie," as its official song, and
not to be outdone in owning an official ditty, the
Tennessee Woman's Press and Authors' Club has
adopted "My Homeland, Tennessee" as the song of
the state.
