MAKING Q R S ROLLS
Operations in Recording and Finishing Meth-
ods Prove an Interesting Film Feature at
Tuners' Convention.
: The Q R S Music Company, Chicago, showed a
very unusual film to the tuners at the Milwaukee
convention last week. The film gave an insight into
processes in the Q R S factory, the recording rooms
and the efficient methods in the making of its prod-
ucts.
The showing of the film took place at convention
headquarters early Wednesday morning and prac-
tically every visitor to the convention was a specta-
tor. The music roll from the raw material to its
completion was pictured and the twelve different
operations necessary for its perfection were shown.
The perforating machines carrying thirty-two rolls
were seen in operation and also the huge printing
machines. In this department is printed the im-
mense quantity of Q R S literature, including the 300
page catalog which is sent to music dealers every
month.
The magnitude of the Q R S Co.'s plant impressed
all those who viewed the film, which was considered
a fine one from an educational point of view.
CLARK ROLL CO.'S CONTEST
Prize of $10 Offered by Winning List of Ten Most
Popular Tunes.
The Clark Orchestra Roll Co., De Kalb, 111., has
announced a contest that should evoke the interest
f a great number of people in the subject. A prize
i $10 to the contestant clever enough to pick the ten
nost popular musical compositions is to be given.
We want to know what ten numbers are most popu-
lar the country over and in order to find out just
which pieces are the biggest favorites we are offering
j£lO:00 in prizes for the individual or firm which sub-
mits the winning list," is the announcement. A list
on the back of a postal card is being distributed
which is to be filled in and signed before the closing
date, Sept. 1. The following is the plan:
"List on this ballot the ten numbers you think are
or should be the biggest hits in the country. Every
composition suggested will be chalked up on a tally
sheet. Votes will be credited to the respective pieces
as fast as the ballots come in. When the contest
closes, the votes will be counted and the ten pieces
receiving the biggest number of votes will be called
the Blue Ribbon Special. Then, if your list happens
to coincide with the winning list, the $10.00 prize is
yours! You will receive at once a credit memo for
$10.00.
"If no one suggests the exact list of ten the $10.00
prize will be awarded to the one coming nearest to
it. If several suggest the winning group, each will
receive a $10.00 prize.
"There are absolutely no strings to this contest.
We simply want to know the biggest hits so that we
may combine them in an all-hit roll. The closing
date of the contest is Sept. 1. The time is short;
better mail your ballot today and be sure of a chance
at the prize.
"When the contest is over we will immediately
make up a roll containing all ten of the winning num-
bers. Watch for the big Blue Ribbon Special. You
can bank on its sure-fire popularity."
ACCOUNTING FOR THE WHISTLE.
Not all the whistles which we hear in the receiving
set are caused by radiating receivers. Two waves
coming in from two different broadcasting stations
may be of just the right difference in frequency to
produce a beat note at audible frequencies, says
Frank D. Pearse in the radio section of the Chicago
Herald-Examiner.
OPENS NEW WHOLESALE OFFICE.
Since the Denver Dry Goods Co., Denver, Colo.,
quit the jobbing end of the Edison, the Edison Co.
has opened a jobbing office at 1636 Lawrence street,
with Manager McDonald in charge. A. E. Emrick,
road salesman for the Edison, is now employed by
the jobbing office.

GENNETT ARTISTS ANNOUNCED
Array of Talent—Singers, Pianists and Prominent
Orchestras to Make Records.
John Shaughnessy, exclusive new Gennett Record
artist, is a Boston singer and a member of the Apollo
Club of that city. He was formerly director of music
at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Boston, and has
sung with several oratorio societies. He has a voice
of richness and dignity, full and clear and his singing
reveals the perfect technique he masters. His first
Gennett is "That Was a Perfect Dream" and "Norah,
My Own" (No. 5481). They are tuneful melodies
made doubly effective in musical enjoyment by the
violin obligato of Louis Heidelberg and the superb
piano accompaniment of Thomas Griselle.
With Rachmaninoff's "Prelude"—C Sharp Minor—
and Moskowski's "To Spring," Herman Ostheimer,
pianist, makes his bow to Gennett record lovers. His
every note is clear and distinct and as though he
had been able to dwell on it and gauge in advance its
individual quality of tone. This record is of the
Green Label Series (No. 10094—$1.00) and a pianistic
masterpiece.
The Irene Castle Orchestra, Duke Yellman's seven-
piece syncopation assembly, is a new Gennett organi-
zation and they have created one of the big dance
orchestra hits of the year. Mr. Yellman is personally
considered among the best syncopated orchestra con-
ductors of the day. His suave manner and happy
abandon is contagious and permeates his directing
and his musicians as well as his hearers. Yellman is
master of the piano. He improvises but his natural
musical talent makes his playing remarkable.
Lieut. Lawrence Mansfield Matt and his 106th
Infantry Band have had an enviable career not alone
in this country but abroad where this organization
did great work during the world war. This band is
exclusively Gennett and the full toned inspiring Gen-
nett Records already released by it give promise of
enjoyable martial music yet to come on Gennett rec-
ords. New numbers will be ready at regular inter-
vals.
