WASHBURN MANDOLIN BOOK
In It Lyon & Healy Tells Young People Mandolin
Is Easy to Play.
The new Washburn mandolin book "Be Popular" is
a striking contribution to current advertising litera-
ture. It is issued by Lyon & Healy in the interest of
the Washburn mandolin in particular, and all plec-
trum instruments in general.
It makes its appeal through urging young people to
study music.
The book is filled with illustrations, some of them
technical, and it will undoubtedly be a great sales
help in the hands of the trade.
Lyon & Healy is granting exclusive Washburn
agencies under their new plan, and the franchise is
being much sought.

Ne Species of Wood Free from Blemishes, According
to Government Experts.
The Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wis.,
says no tree produces lumber that is entirely free
from defects and blemishes. The same irregularities
in the wood, natural and accidental, are likely to occur
in all species; and in all woods used for the same
purpose the effect of a certain defect on the strength
and quality is about the same, according to the Forest
Products Laboratory, Madison, Wis. The keen
judges of lumber in piano factories are also familiar
with the admirable and undesirable features of the
stock they buy.
According to the laboratory report, knots are prob-
ably the most common of the natural defects in lum-
ber. Most branches of forest-grown trees originate
at the center of the trunk and grow in diameter and
length so long as conditions are favorable.
All trees do not have pitch streaks or pitch pockets,
but such blemishes are found in the majority of soft-
woods. The amount of pitch often varies as much
within a species as it does between species. A typical
pitch pocket in southern yellow pine may be shorter
and wider than one in Douglas fir, but if they are
equal in area they are practically equivalent in dam-
aging effect. The same kind of glemish-producing
accidents happen to all kinds of wood.

One of the most popular dance and concert or-
chestras in the Southwest, Youngberg's Entertainers,
of Oklahoma City, Okla., ascribes no little of their
success to the Martin Handcraft Instruments with
which they are all equipped. The purity and color-
fulness of tone which distinguishes the Martin en-
ables them, they say, to achieve wonderful effects
which they have not thought possible until they got
their Handcraft Instruments.
Martins are responsible, according to the unani-
mous opinion of this excellent orchestra, for aston-
ishing improvement in both solo and symphonic
work. Youngberg's Entertainers are so proud of
their Martins that they have prepared a card on
which it is announced that they are equipped
throughout with this make of instrument.
SPANISH G E N N E T T RECORDS.
Discos Gennet en Espanol is the name of a leaflet
issued to the trade for distribution by dealers by the
Starr Piano Co., Richmond, Ind. The Spanish Gcn-
netts are sung and played in that deft, light and airy
fashion after the manner of all things Spanish. These
are all by well-known Spanish artists and are inter-
preted with true artistic appreciation of the many
beauties of the melodies. They add great charm and
variety to the Gennett Foreign Library.
leading manufacturers of phonographs have exclusive
agents in Lisbon, but Germany has recently come
to the fore and now occupies first place. The reason
for this is due not only to the matter of price, but
also to the German method in Lisbon of advertising
and selling its phonographic goods. German repre-
sentatives who are well acquainted with the Portu-
guese language and customs visit all of the leading
and even the smaller music stores at regular inter-
vals. Credit is granted, but rarely ever exclusive
representation to any one concerned, no matter how
well equipped he may appear to be to take charge
of a line.
RECORDS IN PORTUGAL.
A good market exists in Portugal for phonographs
and records, says a report from Vice Consul H. T.
Mooers at Lisbon. At the present time Portugal
imports all of these supplies. The United States has
led in this trade and at the present time two of its
