Rockdale was a peaceful commercial place until the
Twentieth Century Piano Co. brought the fire and
brimstone of the ballyhoo sale there. With contests
it aroused the gambling spirit there and literally

DIFFICULTY IN SELECTING
A NEW PIANO NAME
Piano Manufacturer's Experiences in Finding Some-
thing New and Distinctive Are Related.
The apparent ease of selecting a distinctive piano
name was the thought of a certain piano manufac-
turer when he decided to make an instrument with a
name other than his own. But more difficulty than
ease in selection of a name suggestive of music and
musical personages was encountered by the seeker.
Now the choice of a piano name is not a matter
to be decided in a hurry. It seems easy to sit down
with a pencil and pad of paper and write a long
column of seemingly suitable piano names. Just try
it offhand some time. 'Tis easy! But at the last
analysis you will find that what are not impossible
are unsuitable for cause.
If you are musical the names of the great com-
posers will naturally run from the end of your
pencil: Bach, Mendelssohn, Mozart, Schubert, Schu-
mann, Wagner, Weber. These you will find are
already pre-empted. Then your acquaintance with
musical affairs may suggest other seemingly suitable
titles: Lyric, Kreutzer, Harmony, Grand Opera,
Clarion, Cecilia, Cecilian, Beethoven, Apollo, Vio-
lin, Strad, Symphony, Symphonolu, Symphotone,
Paganini, Musicale, Lyra, Celotone, Carmen, Con-
certone, Studio, Musicale, Minstrel, Choral, Cre-
mona, Concord. But these happy titles you will find
are already the patented property of others. What
next? A lot of the authors' and artists' names have
been taken: Goldsmith, Francis Bacon, Irving,
Kingsley, Milton, Rembrandt, Goethe, Tennyson,
Whittier and so on. You will find that your long
column of piano names will stand weeding in a way
that will distract you. Others in search of suitable
piano names have beaten you to it.
LUMBERING METHODS DESCRIBED.
Methods of cutting lumber are described in a re-
cent publication of the Association of Wood Using
Industries. The data is based in a report made by the
United States Department of Agriculture. The text
includes a study of the possibilities for increased use
of dimension stock. Though the information on
which this book is based was collected from the chair
industry, the principles outlined apply to any wood
working factory where lumber is converted into parts
for assembling into products other than chairs. Copies
of the book may be secured through the Trade Serv-
ice Bureau of the Music Industries Chamber of Com-
merce, 105 West Fortieth street, New York.
CHANGE IN BUENOS AIRES.
According to an ararngement just approved by the
National Registry of Commerce in Buenos Aires,
Argentina, Casa Quiroga in the future will be con-
ducted by Bilbao Permentier & Cia., instead of the
personal name of Mrs. C. Quiroga de Permentier.
The house handles the lines of the Behning Piano Co.,
New York, and the lines of the Gulbransen-Dickin-
son Co., Chicago, and Q R S music rolls.
