PRICES AND SHEET MUSIC
Cutting the- Price Never an Inducement to Buy, Says
Department Manager.
. Cutting, the price of music will not bring the cus-
tomers into the sheet music store. The sheet music
buying public will pay the regular price, the price
which provides a fair profit for the dealer for what
he or she wants. It is next to impossible to induce
the public to buy music it does not want. The dry
goods dealer can put a piece of dress material in his
window and mark it down to an alluringly cheap
price and women will fight to buy it, although they
don't quite know what they are going to do with it.
But the sheet music dealer cannot turn a like trick.
You may mark good music down to five cents, but
you cannot make the public buy it with only the price
for an inducement. To be made to buy the public
must be made to want. The music on the sheet and
not the price must be the appeal.
"For instance," said a sheet music department man-
ager this week, "musical people will call at this coun-
ter and buy copies of all music they like in an opera
they have heard the night before. The price is never
considered. But you may find it hard to induce them
to buy numbers from the same opera that did not
allure them. You might offer the latter, songs or
piano arrangements, for the proverbial song and they
will not pipe a note to get the bargain things.
"The regular buyers of pops will cheerfully pay the
hit price for what they want, the latest one, hot off
the presses. You can't sell them the older hits if
they do not ask for them. They are buying what
they want and no system of price reduction will make
them increase their purchases.
