SPECIAL RETAIL SALESMEN
THE COMPOSER'S EAR.
The ear constitutes the basis of musical genius,
according to Dr. Pierre Chantriot, who recently dis-
cussed before the Faculte de Medecine of Lyon, who
says the ear is to the musician what the eye is to
the' painter. But, though the ear is indispensable for
the education of the musician, for the composer it is
only a secondary aid, for had not Beethoven lost his
hearing completely when he composed the wonderful
Ninth Symphony, the climax of his immortal work?
It has not been proved that the ears of composers
are particularly good or characterized by any peculiar
formation, as some writers have asserted who claim
to have noted in musicians a peculiar inclination of
the tympanic membrane.
THE SACRED SONG.
The field of church hymn composing is one invit-
ing the composer, according to Prof. E. Augustine
Smith, of Boston University. But the writing of the
words and music of the religious songs requires the
proper spirit in appeal. Church hymns have been
jazzed, according to Prof. Smith, and they are mak-
ing for ragtime religion, "appealing to the sensuous-
ness of the congregations." Other churchmen see
the need for reform in church hymn composing. But
it's an old story. "Sacred" song is a familiar theme,
but musi* is never vile except in its association, and
that can never be in the churches.

TO GROW CHINA OIL.
Appropriation of $100,000 to start production of
chinawood oil in this country was voted this week
by members of the Paint Manufacturers' Association,
meeting at the Drake Hotel, Chicago. Experiments
have shown, it was declared, that better chinawood
oil, or which there is an importation of 10,000,000
gallons each year from Japan and China, can be pro-
duced in Florida than in the orient, at a saving of
approximately $1 per gallon. Fifty thousand tung
trees, whose nuts yield the oil, are to be planted on
the waste lands of the peninsula state.
