Garden Society Orchestra, Constantly in Demand,
Uses Martin Instruments Exclusively.
Prominent among the numerous fine orchestras that
have been developed in Baltimore, Md., is the Gar-

is director. Not only do the individual members of

highly satisfactory and predicts that in the not far
distant future Martins will be used exclusively by
the Garden Society Orchestra. This prediction seems
to bear out the theory of the Hamman-Levin Com-
pany of Baltimore that Martin instruments will sell
themselves if given a thorough trial.

the orchestra rank high in ability but they combine
their talent in a manner that is productive of music
of the highest class. People of Baltimore are unusu-
ally partial to the Garden Society Orchestra and the
organization is constantly in demand for special con-
cert and dance work.
Director Appier in speaking of his orchestra is in-
clined to give most of the credit for their success to
the effort on the part of individual members. "The
enthusiasm, loyalty and consistent co-operation on
the part of the players makes direction most pleas-
ant and easy," says Mr. Appier. He also declares that
the Martin instruments with which some of the
members of his orchestra are equipped arc proving

No instrument in the musical merchandise stock
arouses such interest in professional and amateur as
the saxophone. The so-called jazz fever has been re-
sponsible for a big increase in the demand for the in-
struments but their undeniable uses in the band and
orchestra give them a standard character which guar-
antees the prolongation of the wonderful demand for
them in the factory of C. G. Conn, Ltd., Elkhart, Ind.
In a recent catalog devoted to the Conn Wonder
saxophones, the purposes of the various members of
the saxophone family were outlined:
The soprano in C is a straight model similar in
pitch to the C clarinet. It may be used as a substi-
tute for the oboe and can be played from vocal
scores without transposing.
The soprano saxophone in Bb is a curved or
straight model as desired, same pitch as Bb clarinet
and is used in quartets. Most band music today con-
tains parts for this saxophone.
The alto saxophone in Eb comes in a curved model
only, and is in the same pitch as the brass alto in
the band. It is a preference as a solo instrument and
is indispensable in all saxophone combinations such
as trios, quartets, etc.
Melody saxophone in C is the popular member of
the family, owing to its pitch which is a tone and a
half below the alto and being in C, is a non-transpos-
ing instrument. It is an ideal instrument for the
home or church as" a "lead" in songs.
Tenor saxophone in Bb has become very popu-
lar in orchestras as a substitute for the 'cello. It
can also play cornet, baritone, trombone or tenor
parts in bands without transposition.
