NEW STATISTICAL PLAN
OF COMMERCE DEPARTMENT
Further Aids to Exporters and Importers Promised,
According to Statement.
The revision of the statistical classifications of ex-
ports and imports in 1922, followed by the transfer
in January, 1923, of the Bureau of Customs Statistics,
with the entire control of the compilation of foreign
trade statistics, from the Treasury Department to the
Department of Commerce, has resulted in radical re-
adjustments in the statistical work of the Bureau of
Foreign and Domestic Commerce. Marked progress
in this readjustment has already been made. The
delay in compiling statistics of imports has been
overcome.
The special monthly statistical statements showing
complete details of imports and exports by countries
not included in the Monthly Summary have been in-
creased from 92 tables with 440 columns to 200 tables
with over 1,200 columns. These statements (which
arc mailed monthly to more than 12,000 addresses,
comprising trade journals, commercial organizations
and private firms) have been received with universal
approval. This special service will be extended as
rapidly as the facilities at the command of the
Statistical Division permit.
The arrangement of exports by groups, sub-groups,
and headings, facilitates comparison with imports and
with production figures collected by the Bureau of
the Census and the Geological Survey. Such com-
parison was impossible, in many cases, under the old
arrangement.
