the appearance of Jackie Coogan at the Liberty the-

some good advertising. A large placard of Jackie
feeding his pet pig, Mildred, with a bottle, was dis-
played with a statement by Jackie that "It's easier to
play a banjo than to feed Mildred."

The American Music Supply Co., 451 Communipaw
avenue, Jersey City, N. J., has the proud distinction
of representing a quarter of a century of good ser-

of high quality. The famous Amsco pin is used in
the world's finest pianos and are considered among
the standard commodities in the list of piano sup-

American Musical Supply Co. are summarized in the
fact that the pianos of most admirable tone and con-
struction are equipped with them.

ADVANTAGES OF VENEERING
Process Is Not Only Cheaper Than Construction
with Solid Lumber But Better.
Although there is a public prejudice against
veneered products, a large proportion of all the
furniture manufactured has more or less veneered
construction in it, according to Forest Products Lab-
oratory, U. S. Forest Service, Madison, Wis. The
same applies to pianos and talking machines. The
high-grade finish woods are used almost entirely as
veneers. More table tops, drawer fronts, doors, and
side and end panels of all kinds of furniture are built
up of three or five layers of wood than are made of
.single solid pieces.
Veneer construction has several advantages over
solid wood, besides permitting the use of cheaper
material, in the core or on unseen surfaces. These
advantages should be borne in mind by the purchaser
who thinks that veneering cheapens the product.
Alternate plies in practically all built-up panels are
laid with their grains running at right angles to each
other; that is, in three-ply veneer the face veneers
are glued at right angle to the core, and in five-ply
material the face veneers and the core are parallel
and the intervening layers or crossbands are laid at
right angles. A panel of this construction has the
advantages that it is more nearly of the same strength
in all directions, and that as it absorbs or gives up
moisture it shrinks and swells about as much one
way as another. Splitting along the grain in one set
of plies is made impossible by the cross grain of the
alternate plies, and rapid shrinking across the grain

in the face veneers is offset by slow shrinkage along
the grain in the core.
Veneered panels do not change dimensions as much
as solid wood. Warping is largely eliminated in
thick panels by plywood construction. More care
can be taken in the selection of surface wood in
veneered furniture than can be taken in solid furni-
ture. The manufacturer can dry veneer stock very
quickly and cheaply, and he can utilize all of his
wood to the best advantage.
Veneered furniture, if properly cared for, will last
as long as solid furniture. The glued joints when
correctly made are as strong as the wood under ordi-
nary service conditions.
Long exposure to very
damp air or direct contact with water, of course, will
decrease the joint strength even when a very water-
resistant glue is used. But such service conditions
would be almost as detrimental to solid furniture as
to veneered furniture, because even in solid furniture
the members are joined together with glue.

Interesting One Issued by Hammacher, Schlemmer
& Co., New York, Much Sought.
One of the most interesting and widely-read trade
booklets issued this year is that of Hammacher,
Schlemmer & Co,, New York, to mark the celebra-
tion of the seventy-fifth anniversary of the founding
of the house. The booklet has been sought by a
great many people outside of the industries the big
supply house serves, as it contains many facts deal-
ing with the history and development of New York
City in the period between 1848 and 1923.
Biographies of William Schlemmer, the founder of
the house and of his son, William F. Schlemmer, the
present head of the famous concern at 4th avenue
and 13th street, explain why the house of Ham-
macher, Schlemmer & Co. has maintained a promi-
nent place in the hardware trade. This old New
York firm is an instance of the marvelous growth
of the city. The historical facts of the house and
the metropolis are interwoven in a manner that makes
the booklet more than ordinarily interesting. The
historical facts about New York from 1848 to date
are absolutely reliable.
A MUSICAL ARMISTICE.
France and Germany have signed a musical armis-
tice. The Germans began boycotting French music
when the French entered the Ruhr. The French
Syndicate of Music Dealers retaliated with a ban on
Germans who heretofore had printed much music
sold in France. Neither side enjoyed letting the
pleasure of patriotism interfere with business, so
both, last week, called off the blockade and are now
doing business as usual.
PORTABLES IN NASHVILLE.
The Brownie Sales Co., has opened headquarters
at 154 Eighth avenue, Nashville, Tenn. The concern
handles the portable talking machines made by the
Edgar Sales Co., Dayton, O., and is pushing the

LINKS BY RADIOGRAM.
Twelve months are expected to elapse before Mar-
coni, having obtained all the necessary licenses, will
link, not merely the British Empire, but the whole
world, by radiogram. From the south and west of
the British Islands he already covers 2,920 miles be-
tween England and New York, and is likewise in
daily touch with Glace Bay (1,906 miles) and with
Montreal (2,700 miles). He is extending from Mon-
treal to Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver, and
thence to Pekin (4,630 miles) and to Melbourne
(7,300 miles). Another route designed is via Azores,
Madeira and Cape Verde, to Buenos Aires and thence
to Punta Arenas, adjacent to Cape Horn. There is
another line, from Great Britain to Cape Town, join-
ing South Africa with Nairobi (Kenya Colony), and
proceeding to Madras, Rangoon (Burmah) and
Hongkong. It is declared that when these wireless
lines are complete every portion of the British Em-
pire will be in communicative touch with every other
state and colony.
Nothing in the Automatic field to com-
pare with it.
