BIG GRAPHOPHONE PURCHASE
Stock of Columbia Machines and Records in Atlanta
Bought by Haverty's.
A purchase of great magnitude has just been made
by the chain store system of the Haverty Furniture
Company, which recently bought the entire stock of
Columbia Grafonolas and records contained in the
Atlanta, Ga., warehouse of the Columbia Grapho-
phone Company, the distributing point of the south-
eastern district. This represents the largest purchase
of its kind ever made in the South by the retail
stores.
The purchase consists of several cars of grafonolas
and 58,000 records. The deal is an indication that
business is good in the South and is an evidence of
the faith the Haverty Furniture Company has in the
public. '
The Charleston, S. C, store will receive its portion
of this purchase, this week. It is a large one, and
will be offered at attractive prices, made possible by
the magnitude of the deal.
INDIANA ACCORDION FACTORY
New Incorporated Company Begins Operations in
Berne Under Supervision of Expert.
Berne, Ind., now has a, company actively engaged
in the manufacture of accordions and other musical
instruments. Six men are now kept busy and the
prospects for the company are very bright. A very
satisfactory number of accordion orders have been
received.
The company was incorporated this spring. That
the stockholders have faith in their new enterprise is
evidenced by the fact that new stock is being sold
right along, and many of the old stockholders are
increasing their amounts. The factory building oc-
cupied has been remodeled and arranged into a prac-
tical workshop for the company.
At the present time the six employes are busy
making parts for the accordions. The manufacture
of these instruments requires that much of the work
be done by hand. Because of the extreme fineness
of some of the work, much time is necessary in the

making of these parts and the most exact workman-
ship is essential. The factory work is under the su-
pervision of Chris Zuercher, who came to Berne last
spring from Switzerland. Mr. Zuercher recently
stated that this is the fourth accordion factory which
he has helped to start.
Much new machinery has been bought by the com-
pany and most of this has been installed. Practically
all of the raw material used in this work must be
imported from Switzerland and Germany. Large
consignments of raw material have been received
from foreign countries and are now being utilized.
COLUMBIA JULY ROLLS.
Orders for the July rolls of the Columbia Music
Roll Co., 22 S. Peoria street, Chicago, arc exceeding
all anticipations of the company. The mailing of the
advance bulletins in the last weeks of June got its re-
sponse in an avalanche of orders which justified the
company's claim for the Columbia roll. line. "Colum-
bia Word Rolls will please your trade and double
your sales," is a slogan of the company which seem-
ingly is verified by the sales returns on the new Aug-
ust numbers. A trial order is suggested to dealers
who are told that "Quality and price make Columbia
rolls the dealer's best profit producer in a roll de-
partment."
LEADS WITH SPECIALTY.
Magosy & Buscher, 232 Canal street, and 118
Walker street, New York, is drawing special atten-
tion to its fine line of hammered cymbals, which are
guaranteed to be "as good as Turkish cymbals and
don't cost as much." This house is manufacturer of
high-grade hammered cymbals in brass and German
silver, from two to eighteen inches. Other special-
ties of the firm are brass mutes for cornets, trom-
bones and French horns and drum majors' batons in
wood and metal. Among banjoists the house has
earned fame- as the maker of Bestone Banjo
Resonators.
DUTY ON RECORD ENVELOPES.
Paper containers for phonograph records are du-
tiable at the rate of 15 per cent ad valorem as flat
paper envelopes, instead of 25 per cent ad valorem as
manufactures of paper as at first construed. The
former rate was fixed by a recent decision rendered
by the United States Court of Customs Appeals.

PHOTO PRINTED VENEERS
Interesting Feature of the New Finland Industry Is
"Tarso," a Processed Product.
Finland is coming forward as a producer of veneer
according to the report of U. S. Consul, S. A. Davis,
at Hclsingfors, to the Department of Commerce. The
manufacture, of veneer and plywood was begun dur-
ing the war. There are now seven large factories.
The figures give an idea of the extent of the industry.
During 1922 veneer exports amounted to 20,000 tons,
representing about a hundred per cent more than the
amount shipped during the previous year. England
received most of the shipments. Belgium and the
Netherlands getting only small quantities.
An important feature of the industry is the pro-
duction of "tarso," a variety of veneer in which, by
means of photography, an imitation of inlaid work
and wood mosaic is accomplished in which original
colors are preserved. Plates are preserved and un-
limited number of copies may be produced. The
price is about three times that of ordinary veneer.
The new process has been patented in fifteen coun-
tries.
BIG CABINET ORDER.
The Wabash Cabinet Co., Wabash, Ind., will soon
move into its new factory addition where the facili-
ties for a greater production will be assured. At
least 350 additional factory workers will be employed
in the effort to catch up with orders and make the
output in keeping with the growth of the business.
The company recently secured a large contract for
taking machine cabinets said to involve a production
value of more than $2,500,000.

LEATHER DEMAND GOOD.
The demand for player leathers is reported excep-
tionally good by T. L. Lutkins, Inc., 40 Spruce street,
Xew York. The special department in this company
which supplies the pneumatic leather wants of the
playerpiano manufacturers .is one of the busiest in
the house. In order to procure the skins for making
this variety of leather a representative of the com-
pany makes purchasing trips abroad twice a year.
