Piano Manufacturers Among Others Are Paying for
the Forestry Mistakes of Fifty Years.
Jt is easy to realize that the head of the purchas-
ing department in a big piano factory would be more
interested in denuded forests, lumber waste and all
the phases of our great national sin than other
workers in the plants. He feels the effects of Amer-
ica's improvidence with its timber supply in a very
tender spot—costs. He knows too that the national
wastefulness with timber adds to the price of every
piano sold.
"For the last fifty years we have been cutting
away at our timber lands in a fashion that would
raise the hair on the head of any forester in the
European countries," says Dr. Hugh P. Baker, dean
of the State College of Forestry, Syracuse, N. Y.
"We have been careless and stupid. So great was
our original supply that we didn't think it would
ever give out. Gangs of lumbermen would simply
be sent from one part of the States to another and
be told to cut. They did. After a strip of land had
been denuded, they left it and went off to another,
there to carry on the same work.
"It is not until a man's pocketbook is touched
that he becomes aware of an existing danger. For
years trained foresters have called the attention of
nun interested in the lumber industry to the waste
that was going on. For years their warnings have
been regarded as the vaporings of cranks."

EVERY MAN. WHETHER
The necessity for quick action in the selection of
a piano was pointed out last week by C. P. & L. J.
Easterbrook, Saybrook, 111. "Now is your time to
buy your piano," advised the firm, which handles
the Packard line of pianos and playerpianos: "Later
in the season you may find it difficult to secure de-
livery on fine pianos such as Packard. Come and see
the famous Packard pianos in our store now. You
will be delighted at the beauty, tone and charm of
these pianos. You will find them priced within your
reach, too."
ADDS PIANO DEPARTMENT.
The McDougal Music Co., Portland, Ore., is busy
getting ready to move into its new store on Tenth
street, where the company will carry pianos, phono-
graphs, sheet music and their usual stock of musical
merchandise. W. A. McDougal is looking out for a
first-class piano salesman as he expects to make the
piano department a big feature of the new store and
it will have to be conducted by an Al sa'esman, or
manager.
